My name is Shannon W. I graduated cum laude from Georgetown University, where I majored in Economics. I have gone on to apply my skills to a variety of disciplines, including coding, entrepreneurship, and writing. Today, I work as a journalist at an online news outlet, where I publish an average of five articles daily on a wide range of subjects, from news to crime and entertainment. I'm energetic, bubbly, and have over six years of professional tutoring experience under my belt.

After graduating university, I spent three years tutoring with a professional tutoring company. During my time there, I became familiar with tutoring students in their entrance exams to a variety of New York City schools; I also became familiar with the Common Core and its approach.

I tend to spend the majority of my first session with students working through handouts to see what their thought processes are. I then assign supplemental homework to reiterate what was taught in each lesson.

My experience lies mainly with Algebra and Geometry when it comes to math. I was able to raise all my students test scores in these subjects. Beyond that, I consider writing my specialty. I enjoy helping students with essay writing-- whether it be structuring a five-paragraph essay or applying to college.

I conside myself an expert in helping students prepare for tests. If time permits, I also like getting one step ahead of where my students are in their curriculum so they are prepared for the next set of materials they may receive from their teacher.

I have a very flexible schedule and am friendly and easy to reach. Feel free to contact me with any specific questions or scheduling inquiries!

Common Core

Common Core

After graduating from Georgetown University, I went on to train to become a tutor with a private company in New York City. All my students, at the time, were taught under Common Core State Standards and I was trained to familiarize myself with this set of academic standards to help my students in school. Each one of my students experienced a grade increase after 3 months of working with me. I would be able to provide testimonials on request.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

After graduating from Georgetown University, I trained to become a tutor with a professional, private company in New York City. I worked there for four years. Over half of my students were in Elementary school; I worked with students to enhance their reading skills, understand math equations to a fuller extent, and improve their organizational writing capabilities.
Theater

Theater

I attended Tisch School of the Arts for one year as an acting major before transitioning to Georgetown University, where I was involved in theatrical productions. Since then, I have gone on to work as a professional actress: I have appeared on shows like "Law & Order: SVU", "Orange is the New Black", and have also worked with prestigious actors off-Broadway.

Patient and kind tutor

Shannon helped prepare my daughter for a test. My daughter had been feeling less than confident in her PEMDAS skills. But, after one session with Shannon she felt more than capable of acing the test!

Very engaging, well thought out lesson

Shannon was warm and engaging which made my daughter feel immediately at ease. The lesson was fun and my daughter said the time flew by. It's clear that Shannon is a knowledgeable and insightful tutor, and we look forward to many more lessons with her.

Knowledgeable and patients and gregarious

I can't ask for more out of a tutor. Shannon is fantastic at what she does. My first lesson with her was amazing. i just couldn't find the right tutor for myself because my challenge with the English language is pretty specific and I have changed lots of tutors because they were not helpful. Shannon identified my weaknesses immediately and that was extremely helpful. she's all in one a full package torur. highly recommanded.

Truly exceptional tutor

Shannon tutored our 9 year old daughter. She was patient, thoughtful and above everything incredibly knowledgable. She came prepared having reviewed homework that was assigned, planned a lesson and made all of it incredibly enjoyable. At the end we caught up to see how the session went. We will be working with Shannon a lot more in the future!
