About Vernon

I have been a math tutor for five years. I also worked as a middle school math teacher in a high needs school for one year. I believe in the UPS - check method of solving problems. That is:
U - Understand the problem - what is being asked
P - Plan how you are going to solve the problem
S - Solve the problem
Check - Check your solution, particularly for reasonableness

I believe in giving the students the background so that they can understand how and why certain solution methods work. This enables the student to apply these concepts to new problems they may encounter, and hopefully to internalize what they have learned to make the new knowledge acquired a part of themselves.

I am very good an explaining difficult concepts in novel ways either through word or visual pictures. I am also good at thoroughly explaining each step in problem solving.

I am very patient, and good at recognizing what is missing, when students do not understand a concept.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

TAKS

The intent of the TAKS exam is to test some but not of the subject content objectives. My content area is math. I would utilize some of the released math TAKS exams to determine specific content knowledge and to determine where more reinforcement is needed. The goal would be to determine how to tackle specific content type problems and to review specific TAKS testing techniques in order to improve the probability of success.

TEAS

TEAS is the Test of Essential Academic Skills. Is is used as an entrance exam for nursing school, and is an excellent predictor of success in nursing school.

This exam includes the following four sub-tests:

The MATH sub-test covers whole numbers, metric conversions, fractions and decimals, algebraic equations, percentages, and ratio/proportion.

The READING sub-test covers paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and inferences/conclusions.

The ENGLISH sub-test measures knowledge of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, contextual words, and spelling.

The SCIENCE portion of the exam covers science reasoning, science knowledge, biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, basic physical principles, and general science.

I have a BS Electrical Engineering degree from Purdue University. I completed Alternative Teacher Training Program from Region XIII in Austin, Tx. I have worked as a math teacher, teaching summer school Algebra I both sessions, and one year teaching 7th and 8th grade math. I have tutored students in preparation for taking the SAT and the ACT exams with excellent results. I have also tutored students preparing to take the ASVAB for military service also with excellent results.
