About Luann

Hello there and thank you for taking a look at my profile. My name is Luann and I have a passion for language in general, be it English or Spanish. I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English, with a minor in Spanish, from Texas State University. I am also currently in graduate school and have very little availability, but please feel free to inquire with me and we'll see if our schedules may coordinate.

I took my first Spanish class in eighth grade and instantly fell in love with the language. This has taken me to two Latin American countries where I've lived and taught English or studied Spanish. In the summer of 2009 I traveled to Monterrey, Mexico with a university-sponsored program. I lived there for one month and took Spanish courses at El Tecnológico de Monterrey. In the summer of 2010 I traveled to Chile where I lived and taught English for six months under the English Opens Doors Program, sponsored by the Chilean government. I taught high school students for three months, and then moved to middle school for three more months. This gave me lots of experience managing classrooms, planning lessons, and developing my own teaching style.

I've also volunteered as an ESL (English as a Second Language) Instructor here in Austin, TX. I taught at Emmanuel Methodist Church and El Buen Samaritano, a non-profit organization with the goal of helping Austin Latino families lead healthy and productive lives. These have all been rewarding experiences which have furthered my passion for both languages, English and Spanish.

I would love to help you, the student, with any kinds of school assignments (papers, spelling, tests, book reports, etc.) that you may be struggling with. Or, if you just want to improve your reading/writing/spelling skills in English or Spanish, I could certainly help you do that. Either way, we will get you going in the right direction and on your way to academic success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

While pursuing a degree in English, I was required to take a course called Modern English Syntax. The course's main objective was to learn how to break down every single part of a whole sentence into verbs, nouns, direct objects, indirect objects, and the many other components making up a sentence. In essence, I learned to use and identify perfect grammar (punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, etc.). I made an A in the course. Not to mention, as an English major I was expected to know perfect grammar inside and out.

Also known as revising or editing, proofreading is an essential part of finalizing a document (paper, report, essay, etc) that you've written. I have extensive experience with proofreading, as I've written several papers throughout my academic career, including high school and college. I still use proofreading everyday for emails, correspondence at work, and anytime I read over a document. The more proofreading one does, the better one will become at writing correctly.

Reading has always been my favorite subject. I started reading books in elementary school, and it is still my #1 hobby. Throughout my schooling, I've developed a keen eye for reading and interpreting text.

I took my first Spanish course in 8th grade and have been studying the language ever since. I minored in Spanish in college, and have traveled to and lived in two Spanish-speaking countries. I also participate in local meet-up groups for Spanish speakers. Overall, I have a very good grasp on the language.

I've acquired a substantial set of vocabulary over the years, both through education and reading. I am fully capable of helping students learn to embellish school papers and reports using a wider variety of vocabulary words.

Writing has been an essential part of my education, and I've written several papers throughout my academic career. Through constant revision and feedback from Teachers/Professors, I've learned to communicate in writing correctly, effectively, and according to special instructions from the Professor. Different assignments have called for a variety of writing methods. I have ample experience writing essays, research papers, analytical papers, technical writing, informative papers, and a handful of others.

Good start — Luann came for our first session yesterday. She worked well with our 7 yr old son. Naturally, there is a 'getting to know you' period especially with a young child but she took it all in stride. She let him run a few discussions and persuaded him to do his part as needed. She got a feel for his current reading skill and talked with me about her ideas to move forward. We appreciate her coming ...
