Hi, I'm Owen!

I’ve dedicated my life to mathematics. As a student, I ranked in the top 100 in the U.S. in MathCounts. I earned my B.S. in Math from the College of William & Mary, where I received the Leiba Rodman Excellence in Research Award, and studied abroad in the rigorous Math in Moscow program. Hi, I'm Owen!

I’ve dedicated my life to mathematics. As a student, I ranked in the top 100 in the U.S. in MathCounts. I earned my B.S. in Math from the College of William & Mary, where I received the Leiba Rodman Excellence in Research Award, and studied abroad in the rigorous Math in Moscow program. I later earned a Master of Mathematics in Combinatorics and Optimization from the University of Waterloo.

I began tutoring as a side gig and quickly fell in love with it. Over the past decade, I’ve taught and tutored full time, accumulating 10,000+ hours working one-on-one and in small groups. I teach everything from Algebra 1 through AP Precalculus, AP Calculus AB/BC, Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Discrete Math, SAT/ACT, GRE Quantitative, and more.

My core belief is that strong mathematicians are grounded in intuition. Rather than memorizing endless formulas, students should deeply understand a few key ideas and learn how to build from them. I make sure students are firmly rooted in the foundations of whatever subject they’re studying.

That philosophy also lets students lead the lesson. I can teach lecture-style lessons aligned to many curricula, work through homework while building mastery, or create custom practice tests that match a class’s difficulty and expectations. My job is to adapt to the learning style that works best for each student.

I also believe engagement matters. The more comfortable and interested a student is, the better they learn and retain. Outside math, I’m a lifelong soccer player, avid weightlifter, retired cellist, and cat dad of two. I enjoy connecting with students as people and using stories and shared experiences to make learning more meaningful.

ACT Science

ACT Science

As the co-founder of a test-preparation company, I’ve spent years teaching ACT students, developing curriculum, training tutors, and analyzing the strategies that consistently produce score improvements. I’ve worked with many students specifically on ACT Science and have seen firsthand which approaches translate into better results. My approach treats ACT Science primarily as a reasoning and data-analysis test rather than a test of scientific memorization. I teach students to quickly interpret graphs and tables, understand experimental design, identify relationships between variables, and locate the specific evidence needed to answer each question. The goal is to make unfamiliar scientific passages feel systematic and predictable—even when the underlying science is something the student has never seen before.
AMC (Competition math)

AMC (Competition math)

I competed in MathCounts grades 6-8; I placed top 4 in my state twice and ranked in the top 100 nationally. MathCounts is one of the precursor competitions to AMC, so while I never competed in AMC, I have a very deep understanding of what the test covers. In college, I took multiple Abstract Algebra courses, Number Theory, Discrete Math, Combinatorics, and Probability Theory. These courses align very closely with the more difficult concepts that frame the AMC, so I will be well-versed to help.
Calculus

Calculus

I have spent the majority of the past decade tutoring mathematics, with a particular focus on AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, Calculus I, Calculus II, Calculus III, and Multivariable Calculus. I have worked with roughly 500 individual calculus students, from high school students preparing for the AP Calculus AB and BC exams to college students studying single-variable and multivariable calculus. Through years of teaching AP Calculus review courses, roughly 90% of my students have earned a 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus exam, with the majority earning 5s. I have extensive experience helping students with limits, derivatives, related rates, optimization, integration, differential equations, sequences and series, Taylor and Maclaurin series, parametric and polar calculus, vectors, partial derivatives, multiple integrals, and other topics across the Calculus I–III curriculum. My approach to teaching calculus centers on developing mathematical intuition rather than relying on memorized procedures. In particular, I want students to develop a strong intuition for infinitesimals, asymptotic behavior, and approximation. Once students understand what quantities are doing as they become extremely small or large, much of the algebra and notation of calculus begins to make sense naturally. Whether we are studying an introductory limit, interpreting a derivative, evaluating an integral, or working with Taylor series, my goal is for students to understand why the mathematics works, not simply which formula to use. That deeper understanding helps students solve unfamiliar problems, avoid common mistakes, and become more confident and independent mathematicians.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

I hold a master’s degree in mathematics with a specialization in combinatorics, one of the core areas of discrete mathematics. I have published research in graph coloring, recieved the Leiba Rodman Excellence in Research Award for my research in spectral graph theory, and completed a Master's Thesis in extremal matroid theory. I have nine years of teaching experience and a strong academic background in discrete math, graph theory, combinatorics, number theory, abstract algebra, and probability. My experience includes teaching students how to construct rigorous proofs and develop the problem-solving skills needed for topics such as induction, counting, relations, and graph theory. This background allows me to help students with both introductory discrete mathematics and the more advanced mathematical concepts that it prepares them for.
Linear Algebra

I have a Master's in Math, have taken multiple courses in Linear Algebra. My undergraduate honor's thesis was regarding spectral graph theory, a specialized topic in Linear Algebra; for my work, I received the Leiba Rodman Excellence in Research Award. Over my last 10 years tutoring, I have tutored dozens of advanced high school students and college undergraduates in Linear Algebra.
Precalculus

I have spent the last decade tutoring math full time, with much of that dedicated to the specifics of on-level precalculus, honors precalculus tracks, and the new AP Precalculus curricula. I have tutored over 250 students in precalculus alone, giving me the tools necessary to best serve any precalculus student I work with.
