I am currently a PhD student studying physical chemistry. While I’ve been incredibly successful as a student, consistently being in the top 5% of my class in undergrad and earning a Fulbright fellowship to do research in Germany, when I was a student in high school and undergrad I was intimidated by science and math classes. The kids who felt more confident spent so much time talking that I felt invisible in those classes. It wasn't until I had instructors that took the time to speak to us in small groups and as individual that I felt like I really belonged in STEM fields. I'm passionate about science and mathematics and I hope to share that with students in order to increase their confidence as well as their knowledge.
As a graduate student I have been a teaching assistant for general chemistry courses, where I was awarded by my department for teaching excellence. As a tutor I’ve worked for three years tutoring college level calculus, general and organic chemistry, and general physics. I've also tutored students in AP Chemistry and can AP Physics and Calculus. I have experience working with a wide variety of students-- from those who feel they just 'don't get it' to those who want to go deeper into the material than is possible in a general class. I've primarily worked individually with students but am open to tutoring in a group setting. As a tutor and instructor I believe that my job is to help deepen understanding and build confidence in the material. I believe the best way to do that is by working through problems. Science and math are about how you apply them and that's what students will do when they take their exams and/or use this outside of the classroom. When things aren't connecting and/or you get stuck we pause to really address the disconnect by talking through it. Of course, tutoring is about the students, so I'm always open to tailoring methods to those that will work best. If you have any questions, please let me know! I'm happy to chat briefly before starting to make sure I'm the best fit!
