For several decades, I have tutored students age twelve through graduate school, individually and in a group setting, in subjects such as Creative Writing, Acting and Public Speaking.
In addition to a BA and MFA in Creative Writing from The New School, for both degrees, I graduated with Honors, I have studied with The American Academy of Dramatic Art and The Neighborhood Playhouse.
I have published articles on Fashion, Food, Architecture, Art History, and Design for magazines and blogs, and am writing a novel of Literary Fiction.
Working with students in Creative Writing, I tailor the experience to the subject matter and their interests. In a small group setting, authors engage in a workshop of writing, positive critique, and editing. I suggest reading material pertinent to each writers passion.
My approach to teaching Public Speaking is through Acting or Stand-Up Comedy. Relaxing before an audience is a process that takes time and experimentation. Public Speaking is useful for a writer as readings are integral to the art form.
Having directed Off-Broadway, I work with a text exactly as I prepare an actor for an audition. Actors respond to different techniques. I assist them either in The Method, which includes an intellectual breakdown of the script, or a more external approach which is transformative and helps in overcoming trepidation.
Stand-Up Comedy is useful for overcoming fear of Public Speaking. I encourage students to write their own material, and perform at open mics. I performed and produced comedy throughout the Northeast, which included a weekly show on Saturday Nights in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, followed by corporate pop-ups in private clubs.
Positive encouragement is deeply important to the development of an artist. I am entirely open to a collaborative approach to tutoring. Please reach out to me if you would like to discuss how to move forward. I hope very much to be of use to the encouragement and betterment of each individual I tutor.
