Hello! I am Grant Bergland, a creative and academic writing coach. I work primarily with college and grad students to conquer their writing and research projects to dissertations (and everything in between). I also edit and proofread Fiction and Nonfiction novels, short stories, and poetry. I hold an MFA in Writing from Columbia and taught writing at Columbia University and The New School in New York City. At The New Yorker, I worked with the best writers in the country competing at the highest level who needed to submit their work on-time or early. My extensive experience has translated into a long and successful history of helping students find excellence in their writing in record time.

For the last 24 years, I’ve helped middle school, high school, and college students earn top 1% SAT, ACT, ISEE, and GRE scores. As a writing coach, I’ve helped students from short essays to creative work to dissertations. My philosophy now is the same as it has always been: I do not just help you get an A+ on that assignment, I teach you the tools you need to earn an A+ on your own in the future, again and again.

I am a former instructor at Columbia University, worked at The New Yorker magazine, and was a High School English teacher for 10 years. I know how to compete with the top 1%, write the most compelling applications, and (best of all) teach all of my tricks and strategies.

Earning the best score on the SAT and using it to launch yourself into a great college and an amazing life is a noble dream. Writing a personal statement to demonstrate how you belong in an amazing program is another noble dream. I want to help you make your dreams come true and leave you with more than you had before every time we meet.

I also provide tutoring in: Proofreading, Grammar, Biology, Physics, Geology, Philosophy (Ancient to Modern), Microeconomics, AP Psychology, AP US History, AP World History, and the production of any paper for any class.

ADHD

ADHD

I currently hold a CLAD and CLEAR credential which certify me to teach students with special needs in the state of California. I am a former special ed teacher who managed a caseload of 504 plans and differentiated curriculum in the classroom.
Film

Film

I taught Intro to Film Studies and Advanced Film Studies for 5 years where my students learned about cinematography, mise en scene, editing, sound, scripting, and understanding the individual approaches of directors. As a filmmaker, I won several prizes in 2022 for my short film. It was a short that I wrote, directed, and edited. While I built a team to help me with special effects and hired a cinematographer, I designed each shot and the mise en scene within my extensive storyboards. I can help you with all of these processes!
ISEE

ISEE

The ISEE test supported me full-time in Manhattan and I can tutor all sections of the UL, ML, and LL ISEE tests. Since many students are international I was able to work with them on Zoom before the pandemic made Zoom ubiquitous. I am able to design an individualized program and advise on the best test dates during the test cycles. Since there is so little reliable material published on the test, my experience has helped students double and sometimes triple their scores.
Literature

Literature

I taught Literature 10 years and have a master's degree in American Literature.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I've proofread novels, master's theses, dissertations, essays, you name it. I'm the guy who will help you fix every embarrassing mistake and teach you how to never make the same mistakes again. Proofreading is an act of love for your reader and a place to express your commitment to excellence. I'd love to talk about it with you!
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I taught Public Speaking at the HS level and the issue most people have (including myself) is simply slowing down. As a speaker I've given graduation speeches and most notably I introduced George Saunders to over 5,000 people at Columbia University. For interviews, many of my students are preparing for school interviews which accompany taking the ISEE test. For these students, I always emphasize developing confidence through practice and connecting with one's audience.
Writing

Writing

Hi, I can help you edit your novel, essay, thesis, short story, dissertation, you name it. Writing clearly and assertively is the key to getting the best grades and being accepted into the best programs. I used to work at The New Yorker and I can provide that same kind of professional scrutiny to make whatever you wrote exceptional!

Great ISEE teacher, highly recommend

Grant is tutoring our son Olivier for the ISEE. We have been very impressed by his professionalism and way he handles our son. He has been very proactive helping him understand the process and have tips and tricks to raise his ratings. We are really happy that we found him.
