I am very experienced teaching Hebrew, Judaics, English, and writing. My training in foreign language education means I know how to structure lessons and practice and I can help you master what you are studying. 15 years in college gave me lots of practice in academic writing! I have worked as a private editor and as a university writing instructor. I can help with drafting, editing, and proofreading.

I work a lot with converts, bnei mitzvah, adult bnei mitzvah, and ba'alei tshuvah: anyone who wants to know more about Jewish practice and life as well as learning the basics of Hebrew. I have worked with students in all movements of Judaism and am familiar with different prayers and practice. I also work with first-time language learners wanting to get familiar with Hebrew as it is really spoken in Israel.
For over 20 years I've taught every kind of Hebrew to every kind of student, from preteen to retirement age, including many with learning differences. I also teach Jewish history, culture, religion, and prayer. After Bachelor's and Master's in Government, I focused on Mid-East language and politics, and did graduate study at the U Texas in communications, foreign language education, linguistics, Jewish history, and Hebrew language.
I teach Hebrew alphabet and reading, and first-year beginning level Biblical, Prayerbook, and Modern Israeli Hebrew. I'm especially good at explaining and drilling grammar and vocabulary. I've taught at UT, many synagogues, 2 day schools, and tutored many individual students. I've taught many adult prayer learners as well. So whether you want to learn the prayer service, how to converse in Hebrew, or read the Bible or other religious texts, I can help you out.
If you are already in a class, I'll be happy to work with your particular textbook. If not, I can suggest or provide materials for study. I'm generally available Sunday-Thursday and respond quickly to messages.

I've taught every kind of Hebrew to every kind of student, from kindergarten to retirement age, including many with learning differences. I did graduate study at the University of Texas in foreign language educational methods, and linguistics, as well as Hebrew language and Jewish history. I love Hebrew and love finding the best way for each student to learn it. I teach Hebrew alphabet and reading, and first-year level Biblical, Prayerbook, and Modern Israeli Hebrew. I'm especially good at explaining and drilling grammar and vocabulary. I also do Hebrew-only oral proficiency drills. I've taught at UT, most of the area synagogues, our 2 day schools, the Jewish Community Association, and tutored many individual students. I also tutor Hebrew school and bnei mitzvah students and am familiar with most U.S. standard prayerbooks. I've taught many adult prayer learners as well. So whether you want to learn the prayer service, how to converse in Hebrew, or read the Bible or other religious texts, I can help you out.

Experienced, friendly, encouraging teacher !

Rebecca is teaching my 11 1/2 year old daughter Hebrew as well as giving lessons on Jewish practices and culture. Rebecca is doing a great job helping my daughter Annabel feel good and productive in gaining skills and knowledge. She is very experienced in working with students from a variety of backgrounds which gave us confidence this would work - and we were right ! Rebecca is also a strong communicator and organizer when it comes to scheduling which keeps things on track ! She also have provided good recommendations on learning materials and keeps notes handy on what was studied each week.

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

Rebecca gave life to the Hebrew language. Her background and phenomenal knowledge of the Hebrew language made something complicated to understand clear and concise. She was patient and encouraging and gave me time to discuss various exercises and learning tools. She shared documents that assisted me in the learning process and got me on track for future learning.

Funny, fun, and incredibly knowledgeable.

There are three things that I appreciate the most about Rebecca's teaching. First off, Rebecca is funny. She brings a great sense of humor to our classes, and I find myself laughing a lot. I think this is particularly important in language learning. When you are learning a new language, you are going to look silly. You have to be able to laugh at yourself in order to progress. By keeping the lessons light-hearted, Rebecca creates a space in which it is safe to laugh and not feel judged. Second, Rebecca's classes are fun. She has all kinds of cute and memorable explanations. I was forever mixing up the Hebrew letter Tav with several other characters, until she told me that Tav is always "tapping its toe". That stuck with me, and I haven't been confused since. This is only one example of the ways in which she makes learning fun. Finally, Rebecca's knowledge is incredibly extensive. She understands not just modern Hebrew, but also Biblical Hebrew, and other Semitic languages too. Whenever I ask Israeli friends about some odd feature of Hebrew, they always shrug their shoulders. I'm no further ahead. But when I ask Rebecca, she can always tell me. "That's because in the Bible, in the Book of So-and-So, it says..." or "that's because what is today a velar stop used to be a pharyngeal historically, and still is a pharyngeal in other modern Semitic languages..." I always walk away with a deeper appreciation of the language that I'm learning. I look forward to my lessons with Rebecca, and I would recommend her without hesitation to anyone else who wants to learn Hebrew.
