Hi,
My name is Valarie and I have 10 years of experience working in education. I have taught in Texas within traditional classrooms, as a private tutor, and working as an adolescent Mental Health Educator within a University for 4 years.
I tutor in a lot of different areas, but my expertise is in English Education, ACT/SAT prep, and English as a Second Language learning. As a tutor, I have worked directly with students on their essay writing, creative writing, grammar, and test prep both in one-on-one and within classroom environments.
I am passionate about focusing on the student needs and establishing skills alongside the student so they can grow to be a strong, independent learner. I approach each student with empathy and patience, providing the tools and support they need to meet educational expectations. I focus on adaptability, giving grace, and utilizing different technology tools or websites throughout my teaching.
I have a teacher certification for 7-12th grade English and an ESL (English as a Second Language) endorsement. I graduated with a Master's degree in Media Studies, and a Bachelor's in Radio, Television, and Film. I also have 3+ years of experience teaching virtual and in-person movie editing and video production classes for youth. I have produced and directed several short films that have screened in national and international festivals such as South by South West.
My ultimate goal is to provide students an opportunity for creativity and autonomy, while also engaging in a fun way so students are invested in their own learning. Please do not hesitate to reach out and ask any additional questions or schedule a lesson!
