Hello, and thank you for visiting my profile.

I specialize exclusively in high-stakes exam preparation, including SAT Reading and Writing and Advanced Placement courses in U.S. History, Government, World History, and English Language. My work centers on structured preparation that produces measurable academic growth.

I am a certified teacher in English, mathematics, and social studies with more than thirty years of classroom experience. I also serve as an AP Reader, scoring official Advanced Placement exams and applying College Board rubrics directly in my instruction. I am the author of the Unlocking series for SAT and AP courses, including Unlocking AP U.S. History, Unlocking AP World History, and Unlocking AP Government. These publications reflect the same disciplined approach I bring to every session.

Over the course of my career, I have coached thousands of students, with many achieving significant SAT score increases and more than 1,500 earning college credit through AP examinations. Seven of my students have qualified as National Merit Semifinalists.

My sessions are focused, analytical, and progress-driven. I assess quickly, correct structural weaknesses immediately, and document growth over time. Families seeking serious preparation, clear strategy, and consistent results are welcome to reach out.

American History

American History

I score the AP U.S. History essays for College Board. For more than 15 years, I have taught AP U.S. History and have published specifications for the APUSH curriculum framework. My specialty is coaching students to write the long essay and document-based essay.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I am a published author of a Young Adult novel and have mentored two high school and one middle school student to finish a piece of fiction and publish. One submitted her short story for competition at a university and won "Best New Author." She hopes to attend that uni next year.... and she is certainly on their radar for potential scholarship. Writing and submitting works for publication or contest is a great way for youth to create their futures. I had the pleasure of editing a work one of my high school students submitted to the Concord Review. It was also accepted to publication.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified to teach elementary students and have been certified as a reading specialist through the Texas Reading Academy. I have taught fourth and fifth grade reading and math and served as a Curriculum Director and Professional Development Director for several school districts in Texas, focused on literacy instruction. I currently tutor four homeschool boys (all cousins) in reading and math ranging from first grade to fifth grade.
English

English

For more than thirty years, I have taught advanced writing and rhetoric and prepared students for the AP English Language and Composition examination. I have helped more than 1,500 students earn college credit through Advanced Placement exams. As an AP Reader, I score official exam essays using College Board rubrics. I teach students exactly how points are earned on rhetorical analysis, argument, and synthesis essays — how to construct defensible theses, develop precise commentary, and build line-by-line reasoning that earns rubric credit. In our first session, I assess thesis control, commentary depth, and evidence integration. We analyze a released prompt together and apply the scoring criteria directly so students understand how evaluators think. Families see measurable improvement because we correct structural weaknesses immediately and replace vague writing with clear analytical moves. AP Language rewards disciplined thinking and controlled argumentation. That is the standard I set.
Fiction Writing

Fiction Writing

I have mentored several middle and high school student writers... to organize and complete their drafts and to self-publish. My first young adult novel debuted in 2024.
Government & Politics

Government & Politics

For more than thirty years, I have taught government and civics and prepared students for the AP U.S. Government and Politics examination. I have helped more than 1,500 students earn college credit through Advanced Placement exams. I am the author of Unlocking AP Government, a structured guide to mastering passage analysis and question patterns. As an AP Reader, I score official exam responses using College Board rubrics. I teach students exactly how points are earned on argument essays and FRQs — how to construct defensible claims, apply required foundational documents, and use precise constitutional reasoning. In our first session, I assess argument structure, concept application, and writing clarity. We analyze a released prompt together and score it against the rubric so students understand how evaluators think. Families see measurable improvement because we correct structural weaknesses immediately and replace them with repeatable argument frameworks. Success in AP Government requires disciplined reasoning, not memorization. That is the standard I set.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

For 20 years, I have taught Public Speaking/Communication as a high school credit course. My passion is mentoring students to prepare for their first large group presentation, a job interview, and/or college scholarship interview. I am a consultant and trainer within public education.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

For more than twenty years, I have prepared students for the SAT, coaching thousands through structured preparation that frequently results in gains of 80–150 points. Seven of my students have qualified as National Merit Semifinalists. I am the author of Unlocking SAT Reading, a structured guide to mastering passage analysis and question patterns. I teach students how the SAT is written so they can answer questions with control instead of guesswork. We break down recurring question types, identify predictable answer traps, and master the logic behind correct responses. In our first session, I assess strengths and weaknesses, work through a live passage, and introduce the strategy behind the item itself so it can be applied repeatedly. Families often see noticeable score movement immediately because we correct foundational errors from the start. Your son or daughter and I document growth after every session. Preparation should produce measurable results. That is the standard I set.
STAAR

STAAR

My students achieve the highest performance level of STAAR -- MASTERY. I am a certified teacher in math, English, and social studies and tutor students at all grade levels. For twenty years, I trained Texas teachers on how to mentor students to achieve the highest performance on the STAAR exam.
Study Skills

My specialty is coaching students to write the long essay and document-based essay.
World History

World History

For more than thirty years, I have taught history and prepared students for the AP World History examination. I have helped more than 1,500 students earn college credit through Advanced Placement exams. I am the author of Unlocking AP World History, a structured guide to mastering passage analysis and question patterns. As an AP Reader, I score official exam essays using College Board rubrics. I teach students exactly how points are earned on DBQs, LEQs, and SAQs — how to build defensible theses, contextualize effectively, analyze documents, and demonstrate historical reasoning. In our first session, I assess thesis development, document analysis, and comparative reasoning. We work through a released prompt together and apply the rubric directly so students understand how evaluators think. Families see measurable improvement because we correct structural weaknesses immediately and strengthen argument precision from the start. AP World rewards disciplined thinking and structured writing, not memorization alone. That is the standard I set.

Focused and Strategic APUSH Prep in Just Four Weeks

We recently switched from another tutor to Larry in preparation for the upcoming AP US history test in a month. The previous tutor focused on reviewing the material my daughter had already covered in school. But we were looking for a more targeted and efficient approach to the APUSH curriculum. My daughter felt she was falling behind with the previous tutor's pace. With only 4 weeks left, Larry quicly identified the key areas she should focus on and provided strategies for tackling multiple-choice questions efficiently. I would highly recommed Larry to anyone looking for a focused and result-driven approach to USPUSH prep.

Encouraging and Results-Driven Tutor

He has taught me effective strategies for approaching SAT reading passages, including how to quickly find key information, identify main ideas, and work through grammar structures. He explains concepts in a way that's easy to understand and gives plenty of practice examples to reinforce the skills. He is patient, encouraging, and always makes sure I fully understand before moving on. I can always ask a question when I have a doubt, and he will be sure to clearly explain it every time. Due to Larry's tutoring, I have seen a big improvement in my SAT reading scores and feel much more confident going into the test.
