Hi, I'm PJ! I graduated cum laude with a Psychology degree from Carson-Newman University in 2023. Through the Education AmeriCorps program, I spent over 1,000 hours tutoring ACT Test Prep and Mathematics for inner-city youth in Knoxville, TN. Most of my tutoring experience is one-on-one with teens (13-18), in an after-school program. I tutored in two avenues: ACT Test Prep and remedial Mathematics. In ACT Test Prep, the aim of my tutoring was to take students with good ACT potential and help them maximize their scores. I teach from personal experience, as I scored an official 34 composite twice, resulting in an official 35 superscore that included a perfect 36 in Science. The other focus of my tutoring is helping students who are struggling with pre-algebra, algebra 1 & 2, and trigonometry find their footing and raise their grades through organic insights and true understanding.
You might be wondering if learning mathematics from a psychology graduate is a good idea, and I understand that perspective! Beside the facts that I scored As in Calculus, Probability and Statistics, and tested out of Algebra completely in university, it is also important that I focused on the psychology of learning for the duration of my degree. Very often when you are learning mathematics, your teacher knows a lot of mathematics but does not know how your mind learns and fails to convey the concepts to you. What you need is someone who understands mathematics, and also has an understanding of how to transmit that same understanding to you - and this is both an art and a science. Done right, it can also be unbelievably fun and challenging.
