Hello! I am so excited that you are looking for a tutor! Every student can learn and succeed, and I love helping them accomplish their goals. Some details about me:
*20+ years teaching and tutoring experience
*Experience in grades from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th, students with disabilities as well as GATE
*Homeschool teacher for public charter 6 years
*Specialized training in Dyslexia, Orton-Gillingham, SIPPS, ELD, and more

I have many hours of training in using the Orton-Gillingham method in addition to programs approved for this multi-sensory instructional approach. This method of instruction was designed to meet the needs of dyslexic learners and those with related disorders relating to language arts. I have found that the OG method is wonderfully effective for students with these identifications, as well as all struggling learners and early learners (TK-1st). These strategies also are effective in math and other curriculum areas of instruction for these students who struggle with reading and comprehension of content.

I love teaching and inspiring students to want to learn. There is nothing more rewarding than helping someone reach their goals and feel their own sense of pride and accomplishment with what they can do. Struggling learners work SO hard and sometimes work through their frustration; when they finally "get it" they are so excited! I love being an active participant in that process. I have a lot of experience in working with kids with IEPs, 504s, and specialized learning goals because of varying struggles, including dyslexia, visual processing disorders, ADD, and more.

I would love the opportunity to meet you and your family and help your student succeed and build confidence in knowing that they can do it!

ADHD

ADHD

I have taught for many years in and outside the classroom, working closely with the special education team serving ADHD children with and without IEPs/504s. I have countless hours of professional development training to further educate me on ADHD and what best practices are for kids to be successful.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

I have extensive professional training to identify and serve dyslexic students and those with related visual processing disorders. I participate regularly in continuing education and do extensive research on how to best serve these students. I have also had years of experience teaching strategic interventions for students that have identified disorders and diagnoses under the umbrella of dyslexia. I have participated in training from the Dyslexia Institute and am certified in teaching Sonday System curriculum for Orton-Gillingham instruction.

ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching ELD (English Language Development) to students for several years. I am CLAD certified with my multiple-subject teaching credential. I also have a background in learning a second language.
Phonics

Phonics

I have been teaching phonics for several years at the first grade level, which is beginning reading and decoding as well as developmental. I am very good at helping students learn to use phonics to help them read, and teaching their mouths and tongues proper placement so they can produce sounds properly.Phonics is the study of sounds and how they work together to make up the language we speak. A person's understanding of the sounds in a language and their ability to produce those sounds can help them decode unfamiliar words to help them be a better reader.
Reading

Reading

Reading skills are critical to every student's learning success. Every area of core and integrated curriculum requires students to be able to read grade level text and understand the content. There are many different components that work together for successful reading, such as fluency, decoding, vocabulary, understanding phrases, and much more. When any of these pieces are missing from a reader's "toolbox", their learning success becomes inhibited, breeding frustration and a lack of understanding. I am able to work with students to make sure their reading skills are well-rounded, that their "toolbox" is full and they can use all of their skills together to further their comprehension and overall success across the curriculum. They will become more confident, and develop a life-long love for reading!
Study Skills

Study Skills

Study skills are a critical component of learning to analyze and evaluate large amounts of information, and filtering what information is the most vital to retain by memory, what can be reserved or flagged as a resource, and what is considered supplemental interest. These skills use different strategies and techniques and I would love to help your student discover what methods work best for them and teach them how to use their skills to help them study.

Amazing tutor!

Kate has been a life saver! My son has been working with her for a few months now and we have seen such an incredible improvement in his reading! He has gone to other tutors in the past but has always complained about going. This isn't the case with Kate! He is so motivated and excited to learn!
