With my background in special education, I am able to approach teaching from a variety of angles, and I have developed many methods of instruction so that ALL students can, and will, learn and remember the material covered. I have also worked with individuals in preparation for the SAT tests and MCAS (which must be passed to receive a high school diploma).

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra I for many years, both as a replacement class for students with special needs, and as a reinforcement for those who struggle. I tutor many students in this subject as it is the foundation for their high school math. My approach is focused on the individual's learning method, making the material accessible and easier to comprehend and master.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have taught Algebra II to a wide variety of students, both as a classroom instructor and a tutor. In all settings, I work with the student to approach the material through their learning style. I have modified and adapted concepts to meet the needs of the student and meet all school and state requirements.
Special Needs

Special Needs

I am currently certified by the state of Massachusetts in Intensive Special Needs (all levels) and as an Assistant Principal/Principal (9-12). I have been working with special needs students for the past 22 years, ranging in classes from Pre-K to 22, in both private and public schools. I currently work at a local public high school, and have taught replacement classes for math and science. Additionally, I have worked with students to develop study and organizational skills and strategies to succeed in all their classes. I have extensive experience in test preparation, note taking, and writing skills. I have worked with a wide variety of special needs students of all need levels, and develop individualized strategies and goals to address current levels of strength and need. I am in frequent (sometimes daily) communication with parents of students both past and present, and encourage feedback from students, parents, and current teachers, to see what can be done to best assist the student. I can help you child become all that they can be, and provide you with the peace of mind that a qualified, experienced, and caring individual is working with your child.
Study Skills

Study Skills

As I have previously mentioned in my request for Special Needs, I have been a special education teacher for the past 22 years. Much of my time is spent working with individuals on their study and organizational skills. Many students have difficulties keeping track of assignments, due dates, and long term projects. Additionally, they have spent years taking notes in class without fully understanding the material they are writing down or even copying. Test and quiz preparation is especially difficult for students with special needs, and even for many who are not diagnosed as such. In my study skills/learning strategies centers, I work individually with students within the group setting to establish routines, note-taking strategies, and study skills to accentuate their strengths. Within my school, I am able to talk directly to other teachers to ensure that the methods are acceptable to them, and in other cases, I have sent notes to teachers explaining the rationale behind the methods the student will be employing. Test-taking and quiz-taking can be anxiety producing form many students. By working with them on how to develop, design, and review study guides for upcoming test and quizzes, I am able to help students reduce their anxiety. Certain students may excel in certain formats, and have difficulties with others. The study guides I work with them on to create are designed to accent their strengths, and present information in the most accessible manner for them. I always have, and continue to, instructed students to complete study guides for tests and quizzes two days prior to the actual event so that they may show it to their class teacher for feedback. This has proven effective, as the students receive positive feedback for their work, and helps them to feel that they are prepared.

Fantastic tutor!

Mark has been working with my teen daughter on her Math skills and preparing for MCAS. Mark has been the first tutor to really help break things down and simplify concepts for her. He has an easy going personality, keeps me updated and is very reliable! You cannot go wrong with Mark as your child’s tutor. 😊

Best tutor around

I strongly recommend Mark. Great guy who gets results. My son was really struggling in Algebra and Trig. Mark makes sure he understands his homework and is ready for his tests. My son, a high school senior, actually looks forward to working with Mark, never complains.

Thanks for a job well done!

My eighth-grade son suffered a concussion during February vacation and missed 2 full weeks of his Honors Algebra class. To make things even harder the class had just started some new concepts. Not only did Mark help him to catch up but his report card came and his grade was a full grade higher than his first 2 semesters ! Mark has been patient, thorough and funny and we can't thank him enough.

Learned important skills

Already Jake feels he has learned organizational skills he was never taught that will help him. The only regret we have is not finding your services earlier!

Grateful for all of the successful support and results over four years.

2015-06-12 Mr. Mark has been instrumental over the last four years in assisting Alexis in her study of mathematics. The improvement in her test scores and course grades have been substantial. In subjects difficult for Alexis, such as Pre-Calculus, Mr. Mark made the crucial difference. 2015-01-15 Alexis continues to make effective use of the guidance provided by Mark. We have engaged Mark to assist Alexis with Honors Physics and Pre-Calculus coursework in her junior year. We are very pleased with the progress Alexis has achieved. She thoroughly enjoys her Physics coursework. 2013-03-17 My daughter has completed her second trimester in Algebra. Her grade for Algebra 2A Honors is respectable not stellar. Considering the difficulty of the subject and her end of term test falling I can only be grateful that she held on to an 85 average. I hope for fewer damaging slips in the next trimester and a corresponding advance in her security in the subject matter. The third trimester for ninth grade is a heavy workload as Honors Biology returns with a continuation of AP World History. I am still very pleased with the progress she is making in her schoolwork. Mr. M. has been an enormous aid to her in Algebra. 2012-05-11 My daughter's test scores have improved. She had four review sessions in school and received fifteen out of fifteen questions correct on each of three tests. A twenty question quiz was also given and she had all correct answers. It will be challenging to wait to receive her MCAS scores this autumn. Initial Mr. Mark M. gets along very well with our daughter. She has improved her test scores. Mark is effective teaching all areas in mathematics to her. Mark is providing good preparation for the upcoming MCAS examination. Her eighth-grade teacher has remarked on seeing improvement in her performance in class. We plan on continuing with Mark's services through the summer months.

Could not ask for a better tutor!!

Mark is a superb tutor. My son had a really tough midterm coming up and he was struggling to understand the subject. Mark worked with him and got right in to try and help him understand it better. After only a few sessions, my son was more confident and was understanding the material. He would have never made a passing grade on the midterm without help. Thanks Again!!

Does a great job!

Mark does an excellent job monitoring work and assignments, motivating good performance and giving opportunities for review and re-teaching. He always shows up when he says he will and is on time. He came in late in the game last school year, we credit him with helping our son pass algebra 1, which he had struggled with all year.
