Hello, my name is Randi and I have over a decade of experience tutoring high-school and college students in chemistry!
I graduated cum laude with a B.S. in Math and Chemistry with Honors and a minor in Physics from Mary Baldwin College. I then earned a Ph.D. in Computational Chemistry from the University of Tennessee with coursework focusing on both inorganic and physical chemistry. Here, I was a two-time recipient of the highest teaching award given to teaching assistants in the Department of Chemistry. After graduate school, I worked as a tutor for several years before working as a federal patent examiner in biotechnology. However, teaching is what I’m truly passionate about, and I’m excited to work with students and help them understand the many facets of chemistry!
I have been tutoring since 2011 when I was selected to be a general chemistry tutor due to my high grades and understanding of the subject. As a tutor and teaching assistant, I have worked with students in a variety of settings and class sizes from one-on-one tutoring to small groups to large lectures. My students often achieved test scores significantly higher than the class average.
I am very passionate about working with students and helping them understand chemistry on a conceptual level. I strive to help students understand the bigger picture of chemistry by creating a learning environment where we work together to break down the material into manageable concepts and build a “tool box” of problem-solving skills that students feel confident using to solve more complex problems. These lessons use techniques tailored to each student’s learning style, whether we are working through practice problems, drawing and building models, or creating analogies to make chemistry more approachable. Throughout this process, I ensure that all of my students feel comfortable asking questions and feel supported in their learning process.
I am confident I can lead you to success and look forward to working with you! Contact me to schedule a lesson soon!
