Tutoring can be one of the most effective forms of expanding a students academic skills. Although I have taught in classroom settings at the university level, I have found private tutoring to be a format that fits my personality and skill sets as an instructor. I believe that learning, for many students, is an individualistic experience and requires individualistic attention for certain subjects. I very much enjoy the process of getting to know a student, learning their unique needs, and providing the right type of instruction to most effectively and efficiently improve their skills.

I began my teaching career at the University of Oklahoma back in 2011, where I worked as a TA in the Political Science department. Grading, lectures, lesson planning all came together during this time. Most importantly, I really felt a connection to teaching on a deep personal level, and it had very little to do with the subject. That being said, I transferred to the ESL department the following semester and began teaching to the international community at the University. Here, I really learned the value of connecting with your students as a means to better educate them in a subject. In other words, it really helps to develop friendly, albeit, appropriate relationships with students. Teaching ESL also influenced my teaching methods. Many English teachers rely on their students understanding English on a cognitive level. I had to learn to teach English to students who had zero "ear" English- meaning I couldn't rely on them knowing what was right because it sounded right.

As I transitioned to private tutoring about five years ago, I was able to take this technical knowledge and apply it to ACT, SAT, and writing for ELL students. My success rate has been incredibly high with this method. My students know how the language works because I know how the language works. I do not rely on their native English for answers. I teach them to rely on the rules of English grammar. This improves writing, comprehension, vocabulary, and anything

ACT English

ACT English

I take a very pragmatic approach to the ACT English section. If you understand English grammar, you cannot be tricked by the ACT. After all, the ACT is just one big, trick-based test. I give my students the skills they need not only to be successful on the ACT grammar section, but also provide the context and instruction they need to use those skills in university. I have a very high success rate. As long as the students are willing to learn, I will show them how to get the score they want!
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

Similarly to my grammar ACT instruction, I focus on very straightforward methods that my students can use to succeed on this test. I do not just tell them what the right answer is when they get a question wrong. Instead, they learn the foundational skills necessary to succeed on the comprehension section. This is primarily based in deductive reasoning, which happens to be a skill needed for the rest of the test. My methods have proven to be very successful since all of my students are scoring in the 30s. If you are willing to work, I can show you how to succeed on this test!

The last four years have been spent teaching students how to use grammar and test taking skills to navigate standardized tests. In addition, I also teach basic test-taking skills that apply to all subjects. ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

For over ten years I have taught ELA and ESL. My start in the field began teaching advanced ESL grammar at the University of Oklahoma for two years. I have since specialized in test prep for the last eight years primarily focusing on the ACT, PSAT, and IELTS.
Grammar

Grammar

Grammar is where I got my start in English. I taught ESL at the University of Oklahoma for two years and then struck out on my own so that I could help students with their specific needs. My approach allows the students to learn skills that apply to all areas of study, and can impact their success in ELL, writing, comprehension, and the ACT.
