Elementary Tutor: Specializing in Reading/Phonics, Math, and ELA

As I am an incoming graduate student at Vanderbilt University for a master’s in education policy, I am extremely passionate about providing an equitable educational experience for students. For my undergraduate studies, I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I minored in education. Following graduation, I was accepted to Teach for America Rhode Island, where I taught third grade for two years. Through Teach for America, I received certification through Rhode Island College in Elementary Education (K-5). In Nashville, I will be working as a substitute teacher while I continue my education in my master’s program.

My experience teaching over the past two years was enormously impactful. I taught in an underserved school in Providence, RI, and I had 33 third graders (8-9 year olds) in my class. I taught multiple subjects with my co-teacher, and I was the math lead for the third grade in my second year. The classes are very large, so we would do a mixture of whole group, small group, and individual instruction based on the needs of the students. For reading and ELA, we utilized UFLI, RedThread, and Wit and Wisdom. For math, we utilized CFLM. While these curriculums were informative and well-structured, I was consistently differentiating lessons to meet the needs of my students - especially because our school was an inclusion school. I worked closely with special education teachers to ensure I was providing correct support for students with IEPs and 504s.
