Hello! I'm a professional Spanish interpreter who loves teaching.

I've been tutoring students for four years, working with a wide range of ages and nationalities. I have a Bachelor's in Spanish and in psychology from Vanderbilt, so I've learned technical, academic Spanish with extensive grammar and linguistics. And, with part of my family from Ecuador, I've got personal and cultural experience with the language and its informal, every-day usage as well.

As your tutor, I listen to what you need— whether that's advanced conjugation practice or beginner vocabulary and phrases, for a school exam or just personal enjoyment— and try to make it easy to understand, fun, and efficient!

I first began helping Spanish-speaking middle school students with their homework through a local organization called Conexión Américas. Then, I taught one-on-one beginner piano and vocal lessons to middle schoolers at a nonprofit music school. That is where I learned how to design a lesson from scratch and really tailor it to each student's strengths, interests, and goals. Next, I was a teacher's assistant for an advanced Spanish course at my university. I helped the professor by hosting after school practice sessions for the students, conversing with them in Spanish, creating games to practice vocabulary, and advising them on best study strategies. Now, I also work with another nonprofit, tutoring adults who are studying English as a second language and trying to eventually pass the US citizenship test. I provide them with one-on-one practice in English pronunciation, spelling, and vocabulary, and try to support and encourage them however I can.

I have tutored English as a Second Language for diverse immigrant populations for over 5 years with various organizations. I specialize in preparing students for interviews, tests, or any concrete goal. Also, as a proficient Spanish speaker, I can especially be of help to Hispanic adults looking to refine their English skills.

Spanish

I grew up in a partially Spanish-speaking household, and then decided to study it formally in high school and college after discovering my passion for languages. As part of my Spanish undergraduate major, I learned academic Spanish, as I had to write many long papers in Spanish analyzing literature and culture. I particularly enjoyed linguistics, and from that, I learned how to explain the complexities of Spanish declensions, tenses, modes, and more in ways that are clear and easy to understand. I'm currently working as a Spanish medical interpreter, translating health information for Spanish-speaking patients.

Great Tutor

Maria is a great tutor! She made an effort to find out my level of knowledge and meet me there. I especially loved the fill in the blank worksheets to test your grasp of a concept. Thank you!

Great at communicating!

Maria has been helping me understand the Spanish lesson after my Spanish teacher goes over them with us in class. It’s a great one on one break down verse a group of us trying to understand. I think Maria just does an amazing job at clearly communicating how Spanish works and the whys. So I have appreciated her thus far!!

Knowledge and patient

Maria help my daughter in Spanish for her final. My daughter got a 94% in her speaking part of her test. Her highest ever in this area. My daughters words not mine. I definitely recommend Maria. Not only does she knows the language but she know how to teach in a way that my daughter had a better understanding of the material. Thanks Maria. Will definitely use her again in the future

Knowledgeable and a natural teacher!

Maria was great! We reviewed a few lessons and she quickly had an understanding of where I was in my language learning process. I will be seeing her again and recommend her to other Spanish language learners.

Very knowledgeable and helpful

I am interested in brushing up on my conversational skills in Spanish. Our first lesson, I had trouble with the audio and the microphone. Maria was very patient with me and we had a successful first lesson in spite of my shortcomings with my lap top. I look forward to more lessons with Maria.
