My name is Wendy F. I have combined experience of 34 years in First grade and Kindergarten. Teaching young children to read is my passion. My personal strategy is parallel to the Science of Reading which includes phonemic & phonological awareness and a systematic phonics program. My tutoring experience covers Pre-K to high school students. But, my specialty is phonics, reading and writing of early elementary children. I was the recipient of a $5,000 national grant to develop a technology and tutoring program in my school many years ago. I have worked in summer remediation, group tutoring, individual tutoring and camps focusing on needed skills. Any setting that I work with children, I use a simple formula to identify needs. 1) Assess current stage of development, 2) Develop a plan for each individual 3) Using a systematic approach with The Three P's: Phonemic Awareness, Phonological Awareness and Phonics, dive in and cultivate the love of reading in a child.

My education background includes a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education and a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from East Tennessee State University. College does not prepare you for actual teaching. It gives you the degree to be a teacher. My real education began after college with mentors and colleagues that have helped me to develop strategies to bring success to all students. I enjoy learning new methods and trying new techniques to challenge and strengthen all levels of readers. I use a variety of activities which include magnetic letter trays, flashcards, oral repetition, games, integrated technology, songs, phonetic rules and many more. Learning is fun and engaging. Tutoring is a special time to challenge students to be their best.

Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have been an Elementary teacher for 31 years. I retired from TN and then came to NC. My family is from the area and I just love the mountains. I am certified in K-8th grade and am highly qualified in Math, Science and Reading of all grade levels. I have tutored many students in middle school. I can provide a reference if needed.
Handwriting

Handwriting

Handwriting is a lost art. But, I have learned from the best. The new generation does not see its worth. Handwriting is more than writing letters. It is the best way to teach children to follow directions. The students are so proud of themselves after careful manipulation of their small hands. It ends up being a beautiful work of art.
Phonics

Phonics

Reading is a gift that opens door for a lifetime. I enjoy all of the aspects of teaching children to read. I have 31 years experience teaching Kindergarten and First Grade. I love my job and it is such a pleasure watching children grow.
