I am Benjamin White, and I graduated from college with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. I am currently a PhD student in inorganic chemistry at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. I have experience with one-on-one tutoring for sixth grade math and high school chemistry, as well as experience as a teaching assistant in the lab.
When I entered college as an undergraduate, I was at the end of a prolonged battle with Lyme disease, which impacted me cognitively for some time. During this period, learning was harder. I had to try and try different ways to make myself understand complex subjects, such as math and chemistry. In doing this, I learned how people learn. I bring this to my tutoring approach because I know what it feels like to just not get it. I am passionate about the fact that this has nothing to do with intelligence. It is just a matter of finding a WAY to convey something that a particular person can grab and run with.
I am easygoing and always compassionate, eager to answer any and all questions. Again, I feel so strongly that anyone can learn anything. It just takes patience and persistence. I try to have a variety of ways of approaching all areas of study in order to be able to pivot should an approach need to be abandoned for another. Please contact me with any questions.

Approved Subjects

ACT Science

ACT Science

I am a PhD candidate in chemistry. This requires a very deep understanding of the scientific method, data analysis and how the world works. I have real life experience doing research in chemistry and physics and understand how to reason through the ACT science test.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I use mathematics on a daily basis in chemistry, I am well acquainted with the use of algebra. I also have been in the place where I have had a hard time understanding algebra due to sickness and can sympathize with students who are having a little trouble. I am endlessly patient with things like this too with the firm belief that anyone can learn anything given persistence, and maybe an alternate view to make understanding easier.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I use mathematical concepts like this on a daily basis. Some of my experience using these concepts includes physics classes, research in physics, chemistry classes. These concepts can also be used in data analysis which I do plenty of in chemistry research.
Calculus

Calculus

Advanced chemistry like inorganic chemistry uses a lot of calculus. I have been through 4 levels of calculus along with calculus based physics, differential equations, and physical chemistry. I use calculus on a near daily basis.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have been a chemist by trade for four years and counting. I have been accepted to the University of Tennessee for a PhD in inorganic chemistry. I also have plenty of research in chemistry and physics already along with experience as a lab tech in industry as a summer internship.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have used mathematical concepts for chemistry on a daily basis. Using the required mathematical concepts for chemistry requires a deep understanding of the early math concepts. I have also tutored this subject very successfully in the past
Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel

I have done lots of data analysis as a chemistry major in the classroom and doing research. I use Excel on a fairly regular basis and I think of it as an essential tool for any work in STEM. I also have used Excel in undergraduate research for Physics.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I am a chemistry student who has done plenty of math for a chemistry degree. I use the concepts of rational numbers, exponents and such on a daily basis in my life as a chemist. I also have tutored in this area specifically and gotten good feedback.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I use these concepts in in chemistry a ton. On a daily basis it seems like, ranging from physics research to data analysis.
Python

Python

I use Python on a near daily basis for scientific purposes including data analysis, pure research and for fun projects. I was recently accepted to UTK for a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry.
GED
Microsoft PowerPoint
Microsoft Word

Patient tutor !

Explained to me many times when I was confused and had a practice sheet to gage my math level. Didn’t make me feel dumb for obvious questions. Definitely recommend and keeping this tutor!
