Approved Subjects

ACT Reading

ACT Reading

I have tutored high school students in ACT Prep for over 5 years, specializing in Reading and English. I work well both with students who are below grade-level in reading comprehension and need to work on their reading skills in general, as well as with students who are already scoring high and just want those last couple points in this section. I use a logic-based approach by teaching students how to find the right answers by recognizing the logic puzzles that repeatedly show up in the questions.
African American Studies

African American Studies

As part of my PhD in Philosophy, I have research and teaching experience in African American philosophy and literature. I have taught college courses on race in America, and have taught canonical African American literary texts as part of philosophy and English survey courses at the University of Michigan.
Career Development

Career Development

I work full-time at an organization where I work with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to help them achieve their educational and professional goals. I have designed programs at my organization to help our participants explore their professional interests, identify desired career paths, and achieve stepping stones. I have also worked with more established professionals looking to make a change in their professional trajectory.
Classics

Classics

I completed my PhD in 2025 from the University of Michigan, where I completed substantial coursework in Classics and the Ancient Greek language. My focus is in Ancient Greek philosophy, particularly Plato and Aristotle. I have taught an undergraduate survey course on Ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy, and would be happy to work with students on papers, projects, or test prep in these areas.
Criminal Justice

Criminal Justice

As a philosophy student, I have completed graduate and undergraduate coursework on issues in criminal justice and political science (for example, "The American Criminal Justice System", "Philosophy of Law", "Issues in Political Thought"). I have also tutored students taking courses in Criminal Justice departments. I can help students understand concepts, apply theories to real-life situations, and break down assignments.
English

English

I have a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Michigan, where I also taught undergraduate comparative literature and first year writing. I have also worked as a writing tutor at multiple universities, and worked for a college writing center supporting PhD students in dissertation writing. I have also worked as a teaching assistant at a public high school for English I Honors, English II for ESL students, and Journalism. I have additional English as a Second Language experience, too, as I spent a semester in 2018 teaching English to middle and high school students at a private school in Paris, France.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

In Spring 2018, I spent a semester in France taking courses and teaching English. There, I taught English to classes of 9th graders and 6th graders. I led discussions in English, gave cultural presentations, and designed and led a number of activities designed to help the students practice their English. After returning to the US, I worked as a teaching assistant in a local high school, and one of the classes I assisted with was English for ESL students. I thus have experience working with ESL students when I both do and do not speak their native language. I typically take a conversational approach, while also incorporating formal grammar and vocabulary study.
GRE

GRE

I have tutored test prep for 8 years. I can help primarily with the Verbal and Analytic Writing sections of the GRE - when I took the GRE in August 2019, I scored in the 98th percentile for each of these. I can help you develop a study strategy, give explanations for the answers in the verbal section practice questions, help you target your vocabulary study, teach vocabulary and grammar, and help score your practice analytic writing essays and work with you to learn GRE writing. With Quantitative, though I am not a math tutor, I can help design a study plan based on your current needs, and point you to helpful free online resources for all sections.
Philosophy

Philosophy

I received my PhD in Philosophy from the University of Michigan in 2025, where I won several awards and fellowships from the Philosophy Department for research and teaching. I have taught college courses in political philosophy, ancient philosophy, feminist philosophy, philosophy of literature, philosophy of race and gender, and ethics.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have over 10 years of proofreading and editing experience. I have been hired by academic faculty to proofread and edit academic manuscripts, including a book project in 2024. I have additional experience proofreading and editing smaller projects, such as application materials for scholarship and other education applications, job application materials, along with other various written work, such as emails. I have also proofread and edited materials for those in the professional world, including grant applications, company newsletters, workplace memos, and letters.
Reading

Reading

I have 5 years of experience teaching reading-intensive college courses in English, Philosophy, and Comparative Literature, as well as 10+ years of experience tutoring in these subjects. I have also worked as a teaching assistant at a local public high school for English I Honors, English II for ESL students, and Journalism. In addition to this, I spent a semester in Paris, France in 2018 where I taught English to middle and high school students. As a private tutor, I have worked with elementary and middle school students to improve reading comprehension skills, as well.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

While I completed my PhD at the University of Michigan, I held several roles where I supported students who were writing theses. This included working at the Sweetland Writing Center where I provided feedback to graduate students working on their dissertations, as well as supervising undergraduate honors theses.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Vocabulary goes beyond simply memorizing the meanings of words. In order to develop students' vocabularies, I work with them to ensure that they can understand target words in context and employ them in appropriate situations themselves. I do this via age-appropriate activities, including things like helping them compose narratives using the words, memory games to help with vocabulary retention, flash card creation, and reading and discussing short stories or articles that use target vocab words.
Writing

Writing

At the University of Michigan, I taught writing-intensive college level classes and first-year writing for college students, and won an award for writing teaching from the Sweetland Writing Center. In addition, I have been a writing tutor for over 10 years. I've worked with students at all grade levels, though primarily I work with high school and college students. And, I can help with all types of written work, like literary analysis papers, argumentative essays, fiction and poetry, job or graduate/undergraduate application materials, scholarship essays, and much more. I am truly passionate about helping people express themselves through writing and get their ideas across clearly, precisely, and confidently.

First Tutoring Session

Julian spent one hour tutoring my 15 year old daughter for English class. He went over numerous topics she is struggling in and his creative ideas truly helped her. After the session, my daughter expressed that she had wished Julian was her actual teacher. We will most definitely be calling on him again to assist her with her next assignment. Extremely professional, personable and knowledgeable!

Thoughtful and structured tutor

I had a productive and helpful session with Julian. We reviewed a short writing piece I wrote for a 300 level Philosophy course. Julian read my work before the session, offered thoughts on how I could improve, and gave me space to talk through ideas that weren't clear. I recommend working with Julian!

Expert advice on academic paper

I'm a college grad working on a philosophy paper outside of school, and Julian gave me excellent advice on how to take it to the next level and get it to a state where I can publish it in a professional journal. I was feeling really lost, and now I have direction and am super inspired again. Very much worth the fee. Thank you, Julian!
