I love teaching. My experience is diverse, tutoring all ages - currently online only. I specialize in teaching students with learning differences (special needs), teaching EFL/ESL, and art. The subjects I teach cover a broad range because my experience covers a broad range. I enjoy it all. I have a bachelor's degree and I am certified to tutor here on Wyzant's platform in several academic subjects, as well as EFL/ESL, drawing, painting, and art history. I have a TEFL for Young Learners certification, I'm working on my TEFL for Business certification, as well as having passed the Praxis cert in art. In addition to tutoring, I enjoy teaching in area schools as a sub, both long and short term, working with special needs children and teaching all elementary subjects including art.
Much of my experience has included working with children with ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, emotional challenges, and other special needs. I was a certified respite care worker, licensed day care owner, and an approved child care provider for Catholic Social Services in Illinois. In Tennessee I have taught at several schools whose focus is to increase student scores in low scoring areas of the city. I have experience in leading RTI groups and teaching study skills. Seeing the "light come on" in my students' eyes, when they understand something they have previously struggled with, is a joy. Being a parent of three (two with learning challenges, all gifted) has also given me extensive personal experience teaching.

I teach with patience and encouragement, though I am sometimes firm about keeping students on task when needed. Frustration is rarely productive, so, if the situation arises, I may provide a brief break for the student, and then return to learning.

I look forward to hearing from you and partnering with you to open new possibilities in yours and/or your children's lives.

Elementary (K-6th)

In the past, I was a licensed home day care provider for approximately 10 years while my own children were small. I cared for school age children, as well as younger children. I taught regular lessons and helped the school age children with their schoolwork. I also volunteered with the Head Start program, was a certified respite care provider for children with special needs, and an approved provider for Catholic Social Services clients. In addition, I have raised three children of my own. The youngest has ADD and has always maintained a B average or better.
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

I personally enjoy science very much and would love to share that enthusiasm with my students.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

Having lived in South America and having learned a foreign language (Spanish) on my own has helped equip me to assist persons desiring to learn English as a second language. I understand how difficult it is being in a foreign country, what it takes to learn a language that is not native, as well as the nuances of usage vs. direct translation. I have a variety of experiences tutoring ESL/EFL, from tutoring entire families to individuals. I have tutored persons from Europe, Asia, and the Americas. I thoroughly enjoy this subject as I love learning about my students and their culture as they learn and/or perfect their English speaking skills. I am TEFL Young Learner Certified and currently working on my TEFL Business Certification.
Grammar

Grammar

Good grammar is essential for good communication. I help my students get their ideas across to their audience in an effective way, whether in writing or in speech.
Painting

Painting

I will provide instruction to the beginning painter in oil painting, watercolor, gouache or tempera, and acrylic. I can provide more advanced instruction in oil painting as that is one of my favorite painting mediums and where I have the most experience. Qualifications: I am an experienced artist and I have earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a minor in art history graduating Cum Laude.
Phonics

Phonics

I will teach reading and spelling techniques using phonics while also providing information regarding exceptions to the phonics rules. My relevant college credits include: Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Development and Developmental Psychology. I am currently teaching K-6 subjects, especially ELA, in one of the local school systems. I learned reading with the phonics system. I have many years of experience working with young children through being a licensed day care provider, volunteering at Head Start, working in the Achievement School District, and raising my own three children.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I am very detail oriented when editing documents. My eye picks up even small errors in almost anything I read, as well as in movies and speeches.
Reading

Reading

I love to read and I will share my passion for reading with my students. One reason people struggle with reading is that they don't see the value. Because they find it difficult it doesn't seem fun or worth the trouble. Once a person learns how, then they are able to explore all of the new worlds reading opens to them. I believe that reading should be fun. Even when it doesn't seem to be, such as a class assignment in a subject a student finds "boring," it can still be viewed in a positive way when you know how to find and understand the information needed. I look forward to helping anyone to read. It's like opening a door to a brand new world.
Special Needs

Special Needs

I was a certified respite care provider in Illinois. I have experience working with children with various developmental and/or learning challenges including ADD, ADHD, and physical disabilities. I also have experience working with adults and the elderly.
Study Skills

Study Skills

There are keys to studying any topic efficiently and effectively. These keys include time management, identification of key information when reading, memory tools, such as acronyms, environment, familiar relatable clues, personalization of the material, and repetition.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Teaching vocabulary is a rewarding experience for student and teacher. Having a good vocabulary enables you to communicate well in a broad variety of environments and with many types of people. I will teach vocabulary according to the student's needs and I will also provide the student with tools to help when my tutoring time is completed.
Writing

Writing

I took Accelerated Composition in college and currently still write poetry, short stories, and journal. I'll be happy to assist anyone struggling with writing. Each situation is unique just as each assignment is unique, so I am unable to delineate here exactly what a lesson would entail. I can say that I will try to make lessons fun, as well as useful.

Great Teacher!

My 6 year old son loved Mary! After completing his lesson, he said "thank you so much mommy for bringing me here. I had fun". She has her own methods for explaining tricky concepts, which are fantastic for helping students understand. I'm definitely looking forward to continuing sessions with her! Thank you Mary!!

Mary worked for an hour with each of my boys. She is very patient and knowledgeable. Mary confirmed the areas that each boys needs tutoring. She has a plan for each boy to reach his fullest potential. My boys enjoyed meeting and working with Mary. They are looking forward to seeing her again next week!

Great!

She prepares ahead of time for what I want to learn and prepares accurately. She watches over me to see if whether I understand the material or not and it is very helpful for me.

So far so good!

Mary made us feel comfortable right away. We met at the library where she and my son spent the hour getting to know each other and discussing his academic needs. My son told me that he feels like she can help him. We are looking forward to meeting with her again.

Accurate

Mary met us at the library. My six year old was anxious to be tutored and responded well to Mary. When I sought out a tutor my child was doing poorly in Kindergarten but she started doing well even before she met with Mary. Mary gave me an honest review. She said my child was doing well and didn't need tutoring. We did agree, however, that if we continued seeing Mary my little girl would learn at an even better pace. My six year old wants to meet with Mary again.

Patient Tutor

She was very patient with my daughter and was able to identify her weakness and where to focus more to help bring her up to speed with her reading.

Knowledgeable, Kind and Wonderful tutor

I am Japanese, so Mary taught me English speaking as a second language with using some tests. She was a wonderful teacher for me because she made efforts to realize what I know or not. She used very valuable print for pronunciation and sentences. I like her personality too. She can bring out my positive feeling for learning English and lecture was interesting to me. I am sure that I can brush up my English skill with Mary. I hope many students could take her nice lecture! I am so glad to see Mary and also appreciate WyzAnt for connecting with her.
