I have found, among other things, that over ninety-percent of the time students aren't familiar with identifying main ideas, purpose, or point of many-if not all-passages written on tests.
I've also found that students tend to disconnect portions of information presented them during any set of instruction. This may occur due to our natural tendency for conservation, while forcing the usage of anything stored causes discomfort.
By convincing the student to focus on certain aspects in sentences and paragraphs, many will find that identifying the main idea, purpose, and point really is fairly easy, if shown what to look for while reading. Moreover, showing how any block of instruction is inter-related comes about by teaching the student what to listen for.
