I was formerly a Shelby county schools 1st grade teacher’s assistant. Through my employment, I gained experience in classroom management, student engagement, and planning for small group. However, my main goal was to provide additional support to ensure students reading, writing, and spelling skills were on level with their appropriate grade. While in small group I utilize many methods to not only hold the students attention but make the lesson memorable when applied outside the classroom. It is the most rewarding feeling to see your student gain the confidence you knew they had all along.
I feel reading needs to feel fun again. However, that can not happen if the teacher does not have a fire for reading themselves, and that is definitely me. I try to spread my love of reading through story time, popcorn reading, flash card games, rewards, but most importantly repetitive and consistent lessons.
Much like my background in reading and vocabulary, I desire the students to be fully engaged. Therefore, I apply the sounds and letters to things they find interesting. For example, by using video game theme flash cards or even centering the lesson around that to grasp the attention of the student. This not only makes the lesson fun but it will become a foundation for all other learning.
As a college student, I struggled with studying myself, but with a few tips and skills I was able to graduate Summa Cum laude. I want the skills used to be practical and realistic for the student. This will make study time and studying skills easier to integrate into the student’s schedule.
I look forward to hearing from you and starting your journey to academic confidence!
