I have more than 10 years of tutoring and teaching experience in Hawaii. Cultural and demographic diversity of my clients helped me develop teaching styles suitable to very diverse needs of my students. I tutor both, children and adults. My main focus is in Test Preparation, Mathematics, and Statistics. However, I also worked with students studying Russian, Piano, also beginning Economics and Accounting.

Most of the problems that my students have, result from a failure to install in them the thinking strategies and working habits leading to success. Once the students learn those strategies and apply them to every aspect of their education, they have a very little need for a tutor. The amount of time that it takes to develop the correct thinking skills varies in each case, but I have many very happy parents who never have to pay for another tutoring lesson again in order for their son or daughter to earn grades they want.

In my methods I avoid lecturing. Students get plenty of that in the classroom and since they need a tutor, lecturing proves to be ineffective. Instead, I teach them to ask questions and look for answers. My goal is to get a student to think on their own using the techniques and thinking strategies that we develop together. As students grow more independent of the tutor, their confidence and self esteem grows, they are on their way to success.

I studied both Micro and Macro economics relatively recently. I got A's in both classes. In addition, I successfully helped other students in class to get a better understanding of the subject. I discovered that most students that I helped had trouble in economics because they have had trouble in math previously. If you feel this is your problem too, I am confident I can help you.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I tutored and taught Algebra in Hawaii for a number of years. I worked with both: middle schoolers and college students. Algebra 1 is a transition from working with numbers to applying abstract mathematical concepts. Many students begin to have problems in pre-algebra. In my experience, those who do, have many gaps from previous years. My job is to fill in those gaps, while building their understanding of the current material. The goal is to get students to make connections between numerical operations and application of that to abstract concepts.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 was one of the subjects I taught working in the high school system in Hawaii. I know the pains that many students had to go through making a challenging transition from dealing with numbers to more abstract mathematical concepts. Unfortunately, the school system is set up in such a manner that teachers do not always have the time to explain why mathematics works the way it does and many students get lost and confused. This is the main reason why math is one of the most disliked subjects for some. As a tutor I have developed many specific techniques to help my students to better understand why and how these abstract concepts work in the world of mathematics. I use examples that are easy to remember and apply. I use hands-on visual helpers. I also have many interesting books at home that talk about the history of some of those concepts. I strive to make mathematics come to life for my students, so they can see and understand not only how to solve one particular problem, but also how to see a much bigger picture for how math works in the world.

Calculus

I have a B.S. in Mathematics form University of Hawaii and Manoa. I have tutored Calculus for many years. My first job, while still a student at UH was to tutor college students in the math lab, where I always had crowds of people coming for assistance with their assignments.
Geometry,

Geometry was my favorite subject in school. I believe that I had one of the best math teachers a teen can ever have. She is my inspiration when it comes to teaching Geometry as well as any subjects. Geometry was also the first math subject I taught at my first job. It was a summer class. My students told me that I was one of the best Geometry teachers they had and also I heard many positive comments from the parents. Throughout the years I had a number of Geometry student to tutor privately. The biggest problem my students face in Geometry is writing up proofs. I have my own approach to proofs requiring developing analytical thinking, useful in every day life.

Teaching SAT is a big chunk of of my 15 years for tutoring and teaching experience. I have taught SAT math classes while working with College Connections Hawaii, where I received a formal training for teaching the subject. Russian tutoring

Alina is a good tutor. She communicates well and makes the most of each session. My son is learning Russian from Alina and although he’s only taken two lessons, he’s learned a lot.

Knowledgeable and considerate of time spent

Alina worked on SAT facts and reviewed information that my daughter was having trouble with. She was timely, patient and extremely knowledgeable on the subject matter. We are looking forward to working with her on an ongoing basis for our other children. Great job, Alina!!

Very knowledgeable Tutor

Excellent tutor, she clearly has A LOT of expertise in Russian, and more especially in teaching it, she has clearly taught for a significant time, and has a lot of useful tips for you to use as a student.

Very knowledgeable, great personality, fantastic tutor

Alina taught my high school son pre-calculus, she was very patient, however was very accurate with the tutoring. Alina is amazingly good at Math and has a good eye to quickly grasp strengths and needs of a student and tailoring her lessons for maximum benefit. She got the topics ahead of time and was prepared for the lessons. Will definitely seek her help for anything academic - She is great.

Great teacher!

Alina has helped my daughter from having D’s to A and B only after about 2 months of teaching her. My daughter likes her so much, hoping to keep Alina as a math teacher until college.

Great SAT Math tutor

Alina was able to quickly pinpoint my weak areas and assign the appropriate homework to improve in those areas. After my first session I’m feeling very positive about my future sessions with Alina.

Was very helpful with my school work

Alina helped me with my statistics problems for my MBA class. She was kind and patient. She explained everything so lucidly. She was a life saver in short. I will use her again in the future.

Knowledgeable, flexible, encouraging tutor

Alina has helped me get through an online statistics class. She is very helpful and flexible. There is no way I could have passed, much less done well in the class without her.

Great Micro Econ tutor

Alina is the /best/ tutor I've ever had on Wyzant. I took a really challenging Intermediate Micro. Econ. course at the undergraduate level, one where my prof wanted you to struggle with outside homework so that you can do well on the tests. In fact, most people practically fail them. And so, Because I found that I could not solve these intense math related questions on my own, I found Alina on this site. She was funny, always patient, worked out the problems AHEAD of time, so I wasn't sitting there wasting the little college budget I have. She was readily available by message when i had questions, and even offered to help me on a day she wasn't scheduled to work (Sundays). I wouldn't have done half as well if it wasn't for her guidance on my homework. I was then able to do really well on my tests because of the in depth sessions we had, that helped me to think about micro econ. differently. I am so appreciative for her help and time, a real grade saver!~
