I have been a tutor in Colorado and Kansas for many years. I have taught math, reading, vocabulary, and social studies in the classroom as well as tutoring. I am proficient in teaching early music skills too, like reading music and easy music theory.

Since my BA is in Psychology, I hold enough credits to certify in secondary social studies. I try to find out the students' learning styles and teach them how to learn the material on their own using their learning style. My goal is to have the students teach themselves as much as possible by giving them the techniques they need to learn the material.

I have a unique way of teaching elementary math. One lesson plan I had was on rounding. This is a concept that can be very difficult for students. So I have a family of ducks trying to cross a busy road. It has a center line (5). If the ducks are to that center line, it would be faster to finish running across the road (6-9). If they are not to the center line yet, it would be faster to turn around and run back to the original side (1-4). Then, when we get to a number, I ask them if it would be faster to turn around and run back or finish running across? Many students are then able to visualize this and can round either up or down.

Please feel free to contact me. I am available Monday-Friday and will meet either at the student's home or the local library. I do require at least a four-hour cancellation notice. The first meeting would be a free consultation visit to determine the needs of the student and how I can be of assistance.

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

I have tutored several students and have taught many with ADHD. I am able to give the them small chunks of material at a time. I give suggestions on how to become more organized and how to break up homework and study sessions in order to be more productive. Praise and a reward system are very effective many times to increase motivation. I can assist in Language Arts including writing, reading comprehension, spelling, vocabulary and math skills from counting to pre-algebra.
American History

American History

Hate having to keep track of all those dates and events? I can help with the use of timelines and graphic organizers. I can teach you how to read American history passages and turn them into "on-screen" movies with you in the middle of the action. I teach you how to picture all that is going on in the reading around you while you read. This takes comprehension to a whole new level.
Bible Studies

Bible Studies

I have attended Bible college as well as Christian schools most of my life. I am very knowledgeable about the Bible and can help others understand most passages (outside of parts of Daniel and Revelation).
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a former elementary education teacher. I hold a Masters in Elementary Education. I have been tutoring students as young as 5 through 16 in math and ELA for years. I would focus on skills that are missing in a child's education.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I specialize in the subjects that are tested on but not given extra time due to constraints in the classroom. Telling time, calculating elapsed time, counting money, making change, patterns, adding and subtracting fractions and decimals, multiplication and division of fractions and decimals, probability, word problems, multi-step problems, and pre-algebra methods. If there are other areas from kindergarten to pre-algebra, I am available to assist in those skills, too.
English

English

I have always loved writing and have written for college newspapers. I was taught grammar, spelling, and sentence construction for most of my elementary through college education. I can assist with any of these areas, helping you write whether it's a narrative or opinion writing, a book report, or an essay. If you need assistance in writing an argumentative piece that is not for legal reasons, I can assist in that area, too.
GED

GED

Need help in passing that very important GED test? I can help you understand the reading comprehension for science and social studies, and the writing and math portions.
General Music

General Music

Do those music notes and theory seem like they came from another planet? I have years of piano lessons and have also been giving piano lessons for beginners and intermediates for the past eight years. I understand music theory since I have taken several music theory classes at the college level, for beginner to intermediate courses. I, however, cannot teach advanced music theory or anything that has to do with music production.
Geography

Geography

Do you have to learn the capitals of states, provinces, or countries? Do you have to learn how to read latitude and longitude lines as well as understand basic geography vocabulary? I have learned that taking time to look up the various places helps solidify information. I have always loved geography and know the states especially well due to travelling and moving around.
Grammar

Grammar

I learned how to diagram sentences as a child and fell in love with it! You ask, "What is diagramming?" It is a way to understand the parts of speech in a fun manner. I always thought Grammar was boring until I moved to a school in sixth grade that taught it every year. I fell in love with it, and to this day, I can tell you the parts of speech just by diagramming in my head. It will stick for a lifetime. Of course, I can also assist in learning all the grammar rules that help with the writing process.
Homeschool

Homeschool

I hold a Master's in Elementary Education and have taught 1st-9th grade in writing, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and spelling. For math, I have taught and tutored 1st grade through Algebra I. While teaching at a private school, I taught 7th grade geography and 10 grade government.
Music History

Music History

I have six hours of music history from the Berklee school of music online. I have taught 5th grade music history also.
Music Theory

Music Theory

As part of teaching piano, I teach the students music theory through the beginner and intermediate levels. I have been playing the piano myself for 56 years. If you are having to take a beginner or intermediate music theory course in high school or college, I can help with the concepts.
Piano

Piano

Do you live in the greater Knoxville, TN area and want to take beginner or intermediate piano lessons? I can only do in-person lessons at the time. I have been teaching piano for years and have been playing myself for 53 years. We can meet either at my place or yours, but if the student is under 18, there needs to be a guardian around.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Is your child having difficulty with understanding what "x" and "y" mean in math? I can help with those concepts. I always loved Algebra. My brain just seems to be able to grasp the concepts easily even if they seem to make no sense. I can help with the negative and positive concepts as well as determine "x" and 'y". I have taught pre-algebra in the past.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Proofreading can be difficult, but it is an essential skill to learn, especially in elementary school through college. Students have to write all sorts of papers and even essays for exams. I teach proofreading skills that I picked up while working for an editor at a publishing company. Reading the sentences out loud catches sentences that don't make sense and can even tell where punctuation should be placed. Reading the words backwards helps with spelling errors. Another tool I teach students is how to work with software that can find errors and help correct the writing.
Reading

Reading

I struggled with learning how to read and especially with comprehension skills. I finally learned how to put myself in the story like I was in a movie. I love to read now. I teach this skill as well as context clues and vocabulary.
Social Studies

Social Studies

I have taught geography and government at the middle and high school levels. I have passed the Praxis teacher test in social studies. I have a way of teaching American history by putting the student in the middle of the action. I encourage students to watch free movies on the subjects on YouTube or the History Channel, and teach them critical thinking skills to evaluate the material.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Is your student struggling with learning what a word means? I use interactive vocabulary graphic organizers where the student writes down the word, finds the definition, and either draws a picture of it, and/or uses it in a sentence. I also teach Idioms and am presently making creative slides on idioms.
Writing

Writing

I have taught writing in the classroom and was a writing major for a time in college. We begin by brainstorming the topics if one is not already decided. Then we create either an outline or use a graphic organizer to plan out the writing. Grammar and spelling as well as proofreading are all components to writing.
