I'm Courtney! I am currently a senior majoring in neuroscience and psychology at the University of Tennessee. I have been playing the piano for about 18 years now. Starting at the age of 3, I had formal lessons until graduating high school. I have always felt passionate about the piano and love sharing my gifts with others! In high school, I spent a year teaching piano to two kindergarten students. As they were both beginners, I helped teach the music alphabet, hand positioning, and basic musical rhythms. In college, I started to volunteer to teach piano to disadvantaged students. Every week, we work through the Faber Adventures Piano Books. I take time to ensure the students recognize the notes and play with proper hand placement, even as they become more advanced. I also help them learn a song of their choice to make the process fun and encourage them to practice in their free time. By doing this, I have helped beginner level students build a foundation and appreciation for music. I work well with beginners and can teach theory, sight-reading, and chords.
Along with this, I am well equipped to help with the ACT test, especially the English and Reading portions. I took an extensive ACT test prep course in high school, and scored a 36 in the English section but a 33 overall .Through my tutoring, I aim to teach students test strategies to master the test, while also teaching common grammatical rules. I will utilize practice problems to help the students identify areas for improvement while also helping them feel more comfortable in the layout of the test. Just as important, I will aim to recreate the test as much as possible, by practicing within the time limits given for the ACT test.
For both the ACT test and piano lessons, I want to provide as much resources necessary to ensure their success. I will work with their individualized strengths to create a lesson plan that will help them achieve their goals. Feel free to contact me with any questions!
