I have a B.A. in Spanish from the University of Virginia, and I have over ten years of professional translation experience for non-profits and other companies. My main dialect is Central American-- specifically the Spanish spoken in Costa Rica, but I have friends from many Latin American countries and experience tutoring students desiring Spain Spanish as well as for trips to Colombia, Peru, or for general Spanish knowledge and fluency.

My tutoring philosophy is that one will learn more by having fun, so I propose a dynamic course using real-world examples and experiences to cement vocabulary and grammar. I love to teach, and I am very patient. Spanish is a very important language for use in personal and professional life, both here and abroad. Let me be your -- or your child's-- stepping stone to an appreciation of and eventual fluency in the Spanish language. I am very invested in my students' progress for every level of their Spanish learning adventures.

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught children of an elementary school age in mathematics, reading, and Spanish. I am looking forward to teaching them even more grade-appropriate subjects like English, vocabulary, and writing. Children of this age love my lessons and they learn a great deal from the way that I teach. I am high-energy enough to engage even those who have attention that is quick to stray, and I have the patience to figure out ways to convince children who don't love math that they do or who don't love reading or writing that even those subjects can be fun.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

Math concepts didn't always come easily to me as a child, but I always worked at them until I understood them. Once I did, I loved explaining the concepts to the other students who were lost. The teacher or the textbook often only have one way of explaining a subject, and that particular way might seem like a foreign language, even to a bright student. Let me be your interpreter, and explain it to you or your student in a way that they understand. Once they understand, they can really own their math skills and math can become fun again!
Spanish

Spanish

Spanish is my favorite subject to teach because it is such a poetic language. I have been tutoring for about 5 years, and I have also been professionally translating it for area non-profits and other companies since before graduating from the University of Virginia. While at UVA, I received a B.A. in Spanish and loved every minute of it. I have spent significant time abroad and the language is one about which I am passionate. If I don't have your student loving Spanish and speaking it well at the end of his/her sessions with me, then I haven't met my goal for your student. Languages are the perfect mix of a fun and practical thing to dedicate one's time to, and they can improve English vocabulary as well. They make us more careful in our speech, and more expressive. Learning other languages can help us to understand other cultures and other ways of thinking. I want to help your student learn to speak, read, and write, but also to think like a native Spanish speaker.

Very Thorough

Elizabeth has done a great job with my son and helping him with his Spanish speaking and language skills. Through her initial assessment, Elizabeth was able to target the key areas that my son needed to work on, and, with each lesson, drills down on these areas. She spends time when needed on areas that he needs continued support and when he understands a concept or skill, will move to the next area that he needs help with.

Great lesson!

My kids enjoyed today's lesson very much. Instead of just telling the words, Ms. Elizabeth used food objects and menu to teach them how to order and say food names in proper manners. She is also very willing to answer questions and make sure they understand. My kids are looking forward to the next lesson.

Very flexible and patient

My son started with Spanish lessons with Elizabeth. He was very frustrated in school with his Spanish teacher's inability to teach Spanish. Since his instructions (only 4 so far) he already feels ahead of the game in class and gained his self confidence. Now we switched to English instructions with Elizabeth, which already made some impact on my son even after one session. Elizabeth is very flexible with the scheduling, always smiling and has a very positive attitude.

Tutor responded:

It was a pleasure tutoring your son! He is hardworking and intelligent and I am so glad that he was able to tell me what he needed so that I could make sure to give him all the help that he needed! He was as energetic as me and kept up through all of our activities.

A well-organized tutor with clear goals for her student

Elizabeth is such a great Spanish tutor for my son. Before every lesson, she prepares her materials for the lesson, sets the lesson's goals and sees to it that my son reaches the goals. At the end of each lesson, she assigns my son homework to cement the teaching. She's very easy to be reached by email or by phone and she's flexible with the schedules. I'm thankful that my son has Elizabeth as his tutor.
