Bio

My name is Carmen and I have been tutoring for the past five years. The two main subjects, but not limited to, are Spanish and English as a Second Language (ESL). I currently freelance and work full time as a multimedia designer for print and video, in which I would love to instruct Adobe software to those that are familiar with the programs or newbies.

My passion for teaching started right after college where I lived in South Korea to teach English from preschool to elementary age students. I had a great time there and when I settled back into the US, I found opportunities to teach ESL to adults and tutoring Spanish to students from elementary to college-age. Currently, I'm the director of our ESL program at my church. We have been excited to see the program grow as well as seeing our students grow by using the language skills that they learned in their jobs.

Most of my childhood was lived in Chile, so my Spanish accent is a very "southern" South American accent, but my parents were American. So speaking English was never an issue, but studying in the English language was hard for me when we moved to the US in my early teens. I now can relate with third culture kids in their culture or language struggles, but those tough times do pass. Coming to the US ended up being a great opportunity to not only be able to test in the Spanish AP exams but also be apart of a French Immersion program in high school. As I lived in South Korea, I learned some Korean there and now my current interest is the Russian language. There are no limits to learning your first to many foreign languages over your lifetime, so let's start today!

I hope to hear from you soon and start learning!

Phonics

Phonics

I taught Phonics to preschoolers and Elementary school students in South Korea. We prepared them to differentiate long a and short a, as well as the difference between the rest of the vowels. This was done by children's phonics books and going over rules as well as working on listening skills. We also went over common mistakes of pronunciation that Asians have hard times with such as "would/wood" that they pronounced like "wud" without out thinking about it.
Spanish

Spanish

I grew up in Chile, South America until high school. At that point, we moved to Virginia and I had to start studying in English for the first time. Since I was fluent in Spanish I passed the AP Spanish exams, and started learning French through an extensive immersion program while in high school. I have continued to tutor Spanish to students, especially in the last five years from elementary to college-age students. I love learning new languages and I hope we can nurture that passion with you as well.
Video Production

Video Production

I do post-production from motion graphics to editing. I have been in the business for about 5 years using the Adobe suite. My most notable work has been a lyric video for Focus on the Family's Adventure in Odyssey club called "Get in the Show." I also have made video bumpers for the JumboTron at Gaffney High School's home football games. We were hired by the Board of Public Works for the past few years, mostly for animating a cartoon of the Peachoid (the peach water tower seen in House of Cards) and other 15 sec PSAs.

Great Tutor

Carmen helped my son to advance in Spanish. She is very patient and makes the lessons fun. My son feels that Carmen has been very effective. She does a great job of challenging my son without me getting him discouraged. She has so many resources that she pulls at the perfect time. Carmen is a great teacher!

Good to work with

Carmen had in-depth knowledge of Adobe Indesign and was pleasant and fun to work with. I am looking forwarding to continuing on with her to produce our next magazine.

Highly skilled Spanish tutor

Carmen is a highly skilled and fluent Spanish tutor. She was able to work with helping me understand the rules the Spanish language has which includes pronouns, articles, adjectives, verbs, conjugations, masculines, feminines, and even tips on how to sound fluent. She helped me get trained up for tests and finals. She is highly recommended.

Excellent Tutoring

Carmen was an amazing tutor who really helped me bring my grades up. Her ability to help you learn is certainly unparalleled. I was initially struggling in my Spanish class but her teaching methods were engaging and informational and truly allowed me to succeed in the classroom. With thorough explanations and with her commonly exceeding expectations when teaching both greatly benefited my grades.

Helpful Tutor

Carmen has been a very patient tutor(especially for me, as I don't have many skills in Indesign!), and also very knowledgeable. I haven't worked with computers for many years as I was raising 10 children, so my skills were almost zero! So she has been very patient in instruction.

Very helpful and patient

I learned many new features of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.  She taught me shortcuts and ways to improve the quality of the project. She even went above and beyond to send me tips and further explanations in the chat when the session was over.

Expert knowledge and excellent teacher

Carmen has an expert knowledge a Spanish tutor and is excellent in her craft of teaching. She has been preparing our daughter for the AP Spanish exam by having remote conversational tutoring sessions in Spanish, providing homework, guides and having her prepare flash cards. Carmen has kept my daughter on a reasonable schedule that’s adapted to her level and timeline. Highly recommend Carmen!
