About Janette

I love challenges and adore diversity. Let me help your student find success, through customized educational solutions and lessons that are built on a knowledge of your student, their individual strengths, and how they think. My education includes an undergraduate degree in philosophy and English, a Master of Education in Elementary Education, and graduate work in English and Special Education I have eight years of experience teaching students ages 6-15 with diverse learning styles, gifted, and diagnoses like ADHD, OCD, and others. I also have experience in assistive technology like Bookshare and Kurzweil, and finding solutions with whatever technology you already have available to you. My experience as an Educational Supervisor has also given me the opportunity to benefit from the experience and knowledge of my teaching colleagues as well.

I began tutoring geometry in high school, and since then have tutored students of a variety of ages, including adults in everything from reading comprehension, and writing to technology use and study skills. I pride myself in being able to help students see and experience their strengths, while helping them to develop strategies to tackle challenges, build their skills, and reach educational goals. I can also help college students and adults in the marketplace with proofreading, editing, and other writing skills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

For 8 years, I taught at a school specifically for students with complex educational profiles, including ADHD, OCD, and language based learning disabilities. I also took 15 credits in Special Education graduate coursework at Teachers College, Columbia University. I also co-taught a class there in Computer Applications in Special Education.

Dyslexia

In addition to teaching students with dyslexia at schools specifically for dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities, I have completed one year of training with SMILA, a 3-hour college credit course with Ron Yashimoto on Orton-Gillingham methods, and two days of Wilson Training. All these programs are multi-sensory methods, and based on methods that research that has proven is effective for students with dyslexia.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have an MAEd in Elementary Education, Curriculum and Instruction from The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA. I was certified to teach elementary education in both Connecticut and Virginia. My certifications have since expired and I am in the process of getting the continuing education necessary for renewing these certifications.

Study Skills

I taught at Eagle Hill School in Greenwich, CT for eight years. This school is specifically for students with complex educational profiles, including ADHD, OCD, and language based learning disabilities. I taught Study Skills as a specific class at this school for 3 of those years, and tutored study skills for students there for the entire 8 years.
