I am a retired High School Physics and Math Teacher who enjoys helping students one on one to perform to their maximum ability in areas where they need a little extra help. My specialties include High School Physics, AP Algebra Based Physics, AP-C Calculus Based Physics, SAT II Subject Test and College Students who have never taken Physics before.

Upon retirement, it was suggested that I take up tutoring which has added a whole new dimension to my education experience. With a regular classroom environment, it is not always easy to make sure you are covering every student's learning style. With one on one tutoring, whether it be online or face to face, you get to know the student and can tailor the lesson to their strengths and interests.

I was born and raised in Manchester England and always had a passion for Math and Sceince. I attended the University of Bristol where I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. Upon leaving college I worked in Fiber Optics Research developing telecommunications systems specializing in low noise optical receivers and modulation techniques. My work brought me over to North America in 1980 where I continued in the field of planning and evaluating fiber networks.

In 2002, I felt a strong draw to leave the corporate world and bring my experience to education. I enrolled in a Masters Program for teaching at Belmont University in Nashville and started teaching in 2004 with a professional license in both Math and Physics. It has been an incredible career change which has been incredibly rewarding over these past fourteen years. During that time I have taught every level of Physics ranging from Regular Physics, Honors and AP Physics all the way up to the AP-C level. I have also taught Algebra 1, Calculus and Chemistry along the way. I have taught the full spectrum of students and have totally enjoyed working with those who struggle with the material and starting to see their confidence build. The most special times for me is when a student enters my classroom before classes start and is seeking help on an assignment. The one on one time allows me to focus on the specific needs and learning styles of that student. I feel my time in industry has really been a bonus for me by enabling me to relate difficult concepts and exploring ways to help describe them.

One of the most rewarding classes I have ever taught was Algebra 1 to freshmen. The class consisted of students who were under the perception they were no good at math. I based the entire course in confidence building and related the material to real world applications that they could relate to. It was a great joy to me to see them attain mastery and confidence such that a few doubled up on math and completed Calculus AB before graduation.

I have always loved math and science which I believe is a prerequisite for any teacher or tutor along with the skills to convey that knowledge. My whole goal with students in science is to ask questions and develop problem solving strategies from the information provided. Though many students may never use the material after school, the ability to break complex problems into manageable chunks will always make them valuable employees in their future careers.

After 27 years in Fiber Optics Research, I changed my career to high school teaching in Math and Science. One of the most enjoyable and rewarding classes has been Algebra 1 where I love working with students to build confidence and take away the fear of math. Having been in industry, I always find it important to relate the math principles to real world situations to assist students in seeing practical applications.

Patient and explained things well

John was so helpful and patient and made sure I understood everything as he was explaining the concepts to me! He knew where to fill in the missing pieces that my professor left out without me having to explain much of what we were doing in class.

Excellent Experience

John is providing a foundational introduction to Physics for my rising 9th grader. His expertise was immediately evident and his attitude is making all of the difference in the positive response he is receiving from a 14 year old that would rather be doing other stuff during summer break! Thank you!
