My educational background is a B.S. in Computer Science from Tennessee Technological University. While at Tech, I worked as a computer science teaching assistant and a math, computer science, English, ESL, public speaking, and test prep and study skills tutor. I have also tutored for both Wyzant and Chegg, Inc. I have experience tutoring in person, over the phone, online via a tutoring service, and online via Skype. I've tutored students of all backgrounds; I've taught R programming to a social work graduate student, GMAT prep to a veteran student, statistics to a retired surgeon, and high school math to both honors and remedial students.

My "secret to success" is efficiency; I know that my tutees want to stick to the lesson objectives! My primary tutoring goal is always the student's goal, whether that is to complete a project, do well on a test, improve understanding in the subject area, etc.

I have tutored students ranging in age from seven through the seventies. I try to tailor my tutoring style to student age and ability level. With all types of students, I often find that the primary blocker to understanding the material, especially in math and computer programming, is lack of understanding of more basic material. So I take a step back, making sure to differentiate between the goal skill and the prerequisite skills, and build up the foundation before tackling the goal. I've been told that I provide clear explanations and provide unique viewpoints on concepts.

Other than tutoring, my professional career first saw me as a medical physics assistant at a cancer center, where I wrote internal software to interact with radiation oncology software. After that, I worked in customer support and software development for two radiation oncology software companies. I currently work as a data analyst on the regulatory/quality team of one of those companies. I have broad general career knowledge and am happy to inform students about the skills, job characteristics, etc., of any careers they may be considering.

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

I scored a 36 on the English section of the ACT the first time I took it. I have always enjoyed grammar and writing and have several years' experience helping students prep for ACT English. My top method is working through practice tests together.
ACT Math

ACT Math

I scored a 35 on the math section of the ACT the first time I took it. Beginning in middle school, I loved high school math and teaching it to my classmates. Now, I have several years' experience helping students prep for ACT math. My favorite study strategy is working through practice tests together.
ACT Science

ACT Science

I scored a 34 on the science section of the ACT the first time I took it. My secret? Taking lots of practice tests, which is, of course, my preferred way to work with students.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I aced algebra I as a seventh grader, catching the "math bug" that has never left. I'm passionate about the real-world uses of algebra and have several years' experience teaching it to students of all ages.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I aced algebra II in ninth grade and enjoyed tutoring my classmates and devising practice problems. I have several years' experience teaching algebra to students ranging in age from middle school to nontraditional student.
Computer Programming

Computer Programming

Other than tutoring, each of the three jobs I've had has involved programming, including Python, VBA, HTML, and CSS. My B.S. in computer science provided me with the foundational knowledge that makes programming "work." I have several years' experience helping students get the basics of programming under their belt, whether for a course, a job, or personal interest.
Computer Science

Computer Science

I graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in Computer Science from a top engineering school. I had coursework in introductory programming, data structures and algorithms, discrete math and theoretical computer science, data science, databases, computer architecture, etc. I was exposed to the following languages: 80x86 assembly, C, C++, CSS, HTML, Java, PHP, Python, R, and SQL. I've also been tutoring introductory computer science for over two years.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I find that the biggest blocker in math is poor understanding of foundational material, such as elementary school math. Whether they are learning these concepts for the first time or need a refresher before moving on to more advanced concepts, I have a track record of taking students back to basics to truly understand how math "works."
English

English

I scored a 36 on the English section of the ACT the first time I took it. I have always had a knack for grammar and writing, recognizing them as using similar abilities as computer programming. I've assisted students in essay writing, proofreading, and GED and ACT prep.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

In college, I tutored international students enrolled in ESL courses. Learning basic Spanish in high school gave me an appreciation of the difficulty of learning another language, so I show real empathy for my ESL students.
GED

GED

I've seen firsthand the benefits of a high school equivalency diploma for students' confidence and professional opportunities. I have many hours' experience working through practice tests and helping students relearn high school English and math no matter how long they've been out of school.
Geometry

Geometry

I won the TMTA geometry contest when I was 14. Geometry was one of my favorite subjects in middle/high school, and I have several years' experience teaching high school math, including geometry.
Grammar

Grammar

I have always enjoyed grammar, and I scored a 36 on the English section of the ACT the first time I took it. I have several years' experience teaching basic grammar, helping proofread, and prepping for English standardized tests.
Python

Python

I used to work as a Python programmer for scientific (medical physics, radiation treatment planning) applications, and my current role is as a data analyst who uses Python daily. I have a B.S. in computer science as well as years of Python tutoring experience. I am proficient in all basic general programming concepts in Python, including object-oriented programming.

AMAZING! [R-Studio for Beginner's Lesson & ANOVA/Stats Lesson]

Absolutely cannot rave about Kaley and her knowledge about R Program and Statistics. For my lesson: we covered some of the basics of R Programming, ANOVA, and basic statistics. She showed me not only how to solve my questions and my MANY homework issues--but she also showed me how to search for these problem answers myself (via Google, yes--but it's actually a lot tougher than that). She is very knowledgeable and passionate about her students, and will take the time to walk you through anything. Amazing all around. Thank you for your help, Kaley!

Always A Great Help!

I have worked with Kaley quite a bit in the last few weeks. I need a lot of help with Python programming. She is truly patient and actually thorough in what she is explaining. Kaley helps me understand and re-apply what I learn. I would totally recommend Kaley to anyone who feels stuck, nervous and/or frustrated. She will help you and get it done.

Knowledgeable and patient and will explain everything in details

Kaley is very patient and will explain and reexplain if you don't get it. I'm taking a computational thinking class and it's more difficult than I anticipated. But I'm glad I found Kaley to work me through this tough journey.

My daughter loved her.

She began teaching her Python. I loved that she persisted in making sure my daughter understood a concept. She didn't let my daughter's original lack of understanding on a math concept deter her from teaching it to her and moving forward.

Knowledgeable and Great Teacher

Unfortunately the first ten minutes were cut because of technical difficulties that were out of Kaley's control but I was able to finish everything I needed help with in those 50 minutes regardless and she did great with walking me through every step.

Knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and extremely helpful

Kaley helped me reorganize and rework my lab assignment while giving concise, easy to understand explanations of the C++ concepts I was confused on. She also was extremely helpful in figuring out functions I was confused on and debugging my code. Overall, she is an amazing tutor!!

Awesome tutor, she was straight forward and willing to ensure I understood everything.

I like how she’s patient and knowledgeable and able to explain the steps. I understood much more after my session with her. Definitely will book her again should I need a clear understanding.

Great teaching on Bayes Theorem

Kaley did a great job of breaking down Bayes Theorem and helping me understand the role between joint and conditional probability. She was patient and took time to break down each component of the formula and its role in the calculation.

Python and SQL

Kelly was very thorough knowledge of data software packages. She is an excellent teacher, as she: is patient, well spoken, precise and concise. She has an agenda at hand, and stays on the course objectives in a very efficient manner (this is important on Wyzant, as time is money).
