Hello there! I'm a tutor for everything related to the English language. <3 I have a wide range of skills: I co-taught as a special ed teacher, and was also hired to teach ACT and SAT prep to the highest performers at a top charter school in Chicago. I have my BA in Literature and MA in Museum Studies. I've done freelance writing for Nat Geo and the Smithsonian, and I worked in the education dept of the National Archives in DC. As a grammar teacher for 11 years, I became very good at figuring out what skills a student is missing, teaching mini lessons on that isolated skill, then connecting it to bigger grammar concepts. I worked with small groups and 1:1 to help students who were struggling with any grammar skill. I truly enjoy making complex grammar skills simple and straightforward. We will work on identifying correct grammar in a passage and using in writing. If you have any missing knowledge about: grammar, complex sentence structure (independent and dependent clauses), finding meaning in complex sentences (subject/predicate), or are not exactly sure how to use different punctuation (semicolons, dashes, colons), sentence parts (noun/verb/adjective), or phonics (letter sounds and patterns) I am here and ready to help! I am very patient and compassionate. No question is too tricky, and I encourage all questions. I take time to explain things in different ways: I will figure out exactly which part is confusing you, and I'll find a way to explain it and practice with you. I will encourage you every step of the way. I believe in you 100%, and I know your knowledge will increase with our sessions!

ADHD

ADHD

I worked with students on a daily basis that have ADHD. I developed lesson plans and added accommodations and modifications to existing lesson plans to ensure students with ADHD could succeed with the curriculum. I wrote IEPs and spoke with all related service providers (parents, nurse, social workers, counselors, case manager, etc.) at IEP meetings. I was a Special Education teacher and on the leadership team in my school to ensure all of the students with IEPs were represented in conversations about academic expectations.
Special Needs

Special Needs

I was a Special Education teacher for 6 years at a K-8 Chicago public school, and I co-taught English grammar, writing, and reading in all grade levels K-8. I was then a Special Education teacher, or "Learning Specialist" at a very high performing STEM school in the Noble Network of Charter Schools in Chicago, for 5 years. We did regular test prep (previously for the SAT; more recently for the ACT). Because of my skill base, I was hired by the school to teach an after school SAT prep class for the English section of the test.
