Hi! My name is Paula. I have experience with students ranging from age 3 through adulthood. I understand that the methods for teaching a 3 year old are much different than teaching a 15 year old with some musical background. Therefore, my teaching methods will reflect their differences.
Nancy and Randall Faber have created an excellent curriculum called, Piano Adventures. This is the primary curriculum that I use for piano. Students who take lessons with me will not only be able to read music notes and play them, they will also learn improvisation, sight reading, how to transpose (without writing it down!), and gain a greater understanding of music theory in general.
I have been involved in music my entire life, starting with piano lessons at age 6 and continuing through high school. In high school I added private clarinet lessons as well as voice lessons to my schedule. I minored in music at Roberts Wesleyan College, taking courses including piano pedagogy, many theory and private clarinet lessons as well as participating in the college wind ensemble. I also have experience as a worship leader (lead worship at my church for 4 years) and in bell choir. I played in my church's bell choir from middle school through college and eventually directed that group for 3 years. In addition to my church group, I auditioned for a community handbell choir in Virginia Beach and played for a year with that group. I currently sing on the worship team and play in the advanced handbell choir at my church.
One of my passions is to assist people in developing and refining their skills. I truly enjoy working with people to help them grow an learn. I look forward to hopefully meeting, and working with you! Hi! My name is Paula. I have experience with students ranging from age 3 through adulthood. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have played clarinet for 13 years. I was selected to play in the woodwind quintet in my senior year of high school and the wind ensemble director recruited me to play with the wind ensemble in college. There, I took private clarinet lessons as a part of my minor in music and have continued to play for my own enjoyment as well as at my church.
I have 15 years of playing experience and a minor in music. I took private lessons from 2nd grade through my senior year of high school. In college, I took 3 courses in piano pedagogy (how to teach piano), and 3 music theory courses.
