I am an orchestra conductor, professional oboist, and am published online with materials for the AP Music Theory exam. I have taught International Bacchalaureate (IB) language courses in middle and high school public schools and can help you prepare for their unique format of assessments.

Background: I have two degrees in music (Boston Conservatory of Music, Wichita State), have performed on four continents, and have taught both music and languages in the public schools, private tutoring, and college levels. I am a specialist in the AP Music Theory test, and I have taught music theory and ear training at the high school and college level. Outside of theory, I am an active orchestra conductor, oboist, and teach sight-singing.

Luckily, I am also a heritage speaker of German (thanks Grandma!) and have taught in the public schools in the German state of Rheinland-Pfalz, and German classes in the US. Spanish was also a language I started when I was a young girl and I teach up to the AP Spanish and college levels.

With a master's degree in music, I have studied music history extensively in my classical music training. I have taught music history at the college level and have lived and worked in many of the cities and concert houses, where the greatest composers of history originally created their music. My master's exam contained a 1.5 hour oral exam of pure music history.

As an artist myself, I have been a member of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, and have toured through countless countries as a member of various festival orchestras. I have trained some of the best oboists of the world and am trained in Alexander Technique.

I attained my Bachelor's in Music with additional piano studies from the Boston Conservatory in 2011. I was a highly sought-after tutor in the "PASS" Tutoring Program at the Boston Conservatory from '09 to '11 and taught beginning piano in my lessons. My tutoring methods depend on the level of pianist: (Beginner) learning to read music and focusing on playing technique and musicality. (Intermediate-Advanced) using repertoire from the classical masters, individually matched to student's learning needs and personality.

Knowledgeable and Passionate Tutor

Mickey is an incredible tutor! Her knowledge and passion shines through, every time we have a lesson. I've been taking music theory lessons with her, since earlier this year. She's great at taking complex topics, and breaking them down into more manageable pieces. I've learned so much from our lessons together, in such a short period of time. Mickey knows how to make subjects relatable, so that the information sticks. An example of this is a lesson we had on ear-training/listening for intervals. Mickey used popular music to give me examples of different intervals. (e.g. I've learned that a half step/semitone can be heard in the theme music of the film, "Jaws"). That's just one example of the many things I've learned from my lessons with Mickey. I would definitely recommend her as a tutor!
