My name is Benny D. I have been teaching test prep full-time for just over 12 years. I graduated Vanderbilt University in 1992, but didn't actually find my passion until 2012. I simply love standardized tests and truly enjoy helping my students gain confidence and reach their score goal. I have worked for several of the national test prep companies and owned and operated a successful tutoring and test prep center in Franklin, TN for 9 years with my wife.
I have worked with thousands of students and have helped students earn over 10 million dollars in scholarships. I have experience teaching ACT in a variety of settings including group classes, 1-on-1 tutoring, and school boot camps. I have taught both ACT boot camps to the students and professional development to the teachers. During the pandemic, I created strategy videos that have been viewed by thousands of students.
I enjoy 1-on-1 tutoring the most because I get to focus specifically on the skills each student needs. I like to meet with my students once a week for 5 - 7 weeks prior to the test date. My students take a practice test each week. I believe the best way to get better at anything is to practice. As they take the tests, they should be marking questions they don't fully understand; these can be reviewed during the sessions. I will also put special emphasis on questions or concepts that are likely to show up again. Throughout the years, I have studied the patterns and trends of these tests and have a strong understanding of the most commonly tested concepts, so I am able to direct students to the concepts that will show up every test. I teach pacing strategies and limits to help students with time management. I show tricks and offer tips that help students find the correct answer with less work. Generally, I teach multiple ways to get the correct answer. Sometimes, one approach makes more sense to the student. I understand that each student learns differently and being able to offer different ways to solve the same problem is beneficial.
