I was born in Paris, Tn. I moved to Nashville in the early '80s. I went to Nashville Tech and graduated in 1984. I worked in the business industry for over twenty years in the areas of banking, operations, credit, collections, finance, insurance, and retail. During thinking time, I obtained a B.A in Management from David Lipscomb University located in Nashville.

In 2005, I started in the education field and worked as an education assistant. From this experience, I saw the need for male role models and educators in the field and pursued a masters degree in education from Belmont University. I completed a MAT in Special Education and I am currently seeking an administrator degree in the same field. In 2008, I returned to school and completed a Masters of Education in Educational Leadership. I teach in the public school system locally and see the need that students have for someone to provide the 'push' that is needed for them to succeed in school and in life.

I started working with students in the after school programs where I taught and now work outside of the school system tutoring students one on one.

I also work with adults teaching them how to become responsible with their personal finances, making positive choices concerning life choices, and being a positive role model. Sometimes just being there for others and demonstrating how to make positive choices and looking at the options have helped individuals make correct decisions.

ADHD

ADHD

I am employed with a local public school system in the field of special education. I have been teaching in this field for over four years and working in the field for over five and a half years. Managing students with ADD/ADHD requires training and knowledge in the areas of behavior modification based on research. Students that exhibit attention deficit disorders or attention deficit hyperactivity disorders requires a different and systematic approach in order to learn. This type of student has to have an environment that is conducive to learning. Large classrooms and open environments can be distractions. Too many distractions easily draw their attention away from what is being presented. Students possessing ADD/ADHD need structure, small classroom settings, zone of proximity interactions, and organized lessons to assist each individual. Also, a student with ADD/ADHD exhibit behaviors that stem from impulsive behaviors, noncompliance to rules, and lack of structure. In order to assist a student with ADD/ADHD, you must first get to know that student. Getting to know that student requires taking time to understand the behaviors that are being exhibited and under what conditions. Secondly, the environment that the student is placed in can contribute to the disability. Changing the environment can greatly enhance the success for the student.
Business

Business

Starting and running a business requires diligence, commitment, passion, and a no holds barred attitude. You have to wear many hats: owner, marketer, bookkeeper, salesperson, etc. When I started my first business, I was thirteen. I sold deodorizer/disinfectants that you drop inside the tanks of the commodes. From this experience, I learned about marketing and overhead, cost of goods sold, profits and loss, extending credit vs. payment in full, and probably the most important, cash flow. No one taught me about these things. I learned by doing and reading up on running a business. In the last six years, I have run a small business preparing taxes for individuals and teaching others how to start and operate their own business. I possess a technical degree in small business administration and an undergraduate degree in business administration-organization management. Both of these greatly enhanced my knowledge of running a business from aspects from marketing to strategic planning.
Career Development

Career Development

Career development is where you start a process of where you want to end up and then working backwards from the end result, you put together a roadmap of how to get there. The plan needs to include short-term and long-terms goals. Most plans have a one, three, and five year plan included in the creation of it. You also need to have balance in the different aspect of your life in order to not overdo it in one area and under do it in another area. The plan needs to include educational, wellness, spiritual, family, community, and relationships with self and others. Each one of these categories is vital in order to find the perfect balance that is needed in order for your goals to be attained within the specified time period. The career development is important in a person's life but it must be kept in perspective along with the balance of the other areas that are just as important.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I started out in the school system six years ago volunteering at my oldest son school when he was in the second grade. That experience opened my eyes and heart to the reality of teachers being more than a teacher, but a parent, a counselor, a role model, a inspiration, and sometimes the only voice of reason in that child's life. I started reading to children that could not read, talking to kids that was afraid to talk, guiding kids that had no guidance, and building up the self-esteem and confidence in them. From there, I became an Educational Assistant to a special education classroom of students that had multiple behavioral issues. But even these kids, needed attention, love, acceptance, guidance, and a voice. I became that voice as I guided, directed, led, and inspired them to think, act, and do things differently. I began to see changes in their behaviors, their willingness to ask questions and to treat one another differently. These students had the same desire as any other student. They wanted to be accepted by their peers. I now teach 5-6 grade students at a middle school and everyday is different, but the expectations are consistent and the students understand their role in their educational process. They understand that goal setting and expectations and accountability are not just words but actions that they have to strive to meet each and every day.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

The last seven years I have been teaching elementary, specifically in the subjects of reading and math. I teach in the classroom and then pull small groups for more hands on teaching and intensive interventions for struggling learners.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

Public speaking is an area that every student needs to be experienced in order to present themselves in the best possible way. I started doing presentations in my room from the first year of teaching to the present, which is now going on four years. Even though, the class I teach is smaller, I encourage and challenge my students to speak to the class on a regular basis through class discussion, reading groups, presentations, and sometimes I will just ask them to present their case to me when they make a request. I was in the business industry for almost twenty years and presented numerous speeches, participated in numerous management meetings, and training of subordinates by teaching classes. I struggled myself in college with the speech class and the only way I overcame the fear of being in front of people was to do it. I now teach students how to talk, how to act, how to feel comfortable in front of a group and most of it is done by allowing and guiding that student to do it.
QuickBooks

QuickBooks

I have worked in the business industry for over twenty years. My background includes credit analysis, accounting- receivables and payable, account reconciliation, and general ledger posting. I started a home business years ago preparing taxes for individuals and teaching small business concepts to individuals that wanted to start their own business. I have used QuickBooks as the accounting program to manage my business as well as recommended it to others. This accounting software program is easy to understand, user friendly, and does not require a background in accounting. The format is structured in a way that as you use it, you begin to understand the basics of managing a business. There are other programs out there, but this is definitely a great choice for a small business just starting out. Later on, as the business grows, you can grow with other QuickBooks products.
Reading

Reading

Exceptional Educator currently teaching in the elementary school system. This is the 19th year, the first twelve years were in the middle schools setting. I focus on working with small groups of students that need intensive or specific support to progress and move forward in reading and math. Other times I work with the classroom teachers and support students in their classroom that are struggling or has fallen behind.
Special Needs

Special Needs

I am a Special Educator that works primarily with students that have special needs such as behavioral, emotional or a mild disability. I have worked in this field for over five years. These students struggle in academic areas and because they learn differently, they have to be taught differently. Sometimes their disability cause them to get distracted easily, or off-task. Other times, the lesson may be too fast paced and needs to be slowed down so the students can retain the information. Behaviors, at times, hinder progress as well. All of these challenges create a barrier to the student learning and growing. Special Educators are trained in strategies and behavioral management to assist students in the general education setting or a more restricted setting based on the needs of the student. Pre-testing is done to assess the needs of the student prior to working with each student. Once the level of the student is known, then a individual education plan (IEP) is written with specific goals for that student to begin to learn and ultimately master. We do not just focus on academics, but behaviors, and the emotional needs of the student as well. While teaching academics, we are trained to monitor behaviors, observe and address frequency and duration of negative behaviors that may hinder the student. We compile data to track and monitor behaviors that may be causing the student to struggle academically.
