Hello! I'm Braden. My experience with teaching and tutoring stretches back to my very first summertime job as a children’s swimming instructor. Since then, nearly every job title I have held has involved teaching, tutoring, or mentoring in some way.
I earned my B.A. from Harvard University in Human Evolutionary Biology, magna cum laude, with a Citation in Spanish. I'm currently working on my M.A. in Linguistics, with a specialization in Native American Linguistics & Languages, from the University of Arizona. These, plus a certificate for Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), have equipped me to tutor English as a second language, biology, Spanish, and linguistics. I have additional hands-on tutoring experience with essay writing, high school chemistry, and algebra. My breadth of interests makes me a versatile tutor; at the same time, I am the first to admit when I don’t know something off the top of my head, which only builds trust with students.
Throughout the years, I have refined my tutoring style into one that leverages a student’s existing knowledge to make new concepts and skills more accessible to them. I believe that for someone to truly learn something, they must be able to connect it to what they already know. A key component of this is to form a connection with the student up front so that I can identify what they do and don’t know. Once I know a student’s starting point, I can build an effective path for them to develop the desired skills, step by step.
My students have frequently expressed gratitude for the attention and patience I am able to give them. This leads them to feel comfortable coming back to me for help when they need it down the road. A couple years ago, I tutored a local high school student through her upper-level chemistry course. Now that she has started college, she has reached out more than once for guidance on assignments or scholarship essays, knowing that I would assist her however I could.
