I was a college professor for seven years and I have been a tutor since 1998. I work with students of many ages, from tweens to adults, whether in or out of school.

I earned my bachelor's degree in biology and my doctorate in medicine (MD). I completed my residency and fellowship in laboratory medicine. I know that my real passion lies in being an educator. I started tutoring college students majoring in the health sciences, then I tutored middle and high school students in English and math. Finally, I was a college professor for seven years, teaching a variety of biology and math courses.

In our sessions I will listen hard to determine where the difficulties lie for you, so that I may concentrate my efforts there. I won't inflict prefabricated lectures on you.

My tutoring techniques include the Socratic method, word problems, quizzes, pedagogy, illustrations, and some good old drills. I may use any and all of these to help you get from where you are to where you want to be.

We will work together to increase your understanding. I want you to succeed!

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

In my seven years as a college professor, I taught a variety of math courses to students with a mix of educational backgrounds and learning styles. I composed the lectures and exams and graded all the homework. This in-depth exposure to their work made me very alert to the possible areas of confusion and frustration for students of math. In addition, for five years I have tutored math to middle and high school students who were struggling and seeking help outside of school. The algebra topics in which I have abundant teaching and tutoring experience are: -solving equations & inequalities -FOIL method -factoring of polynomials -word problems -graphing equations & inequalities -slope, y-intercept, x-intercept -solving & graphing systems of equations & inequalities -permutations -combinations -beginning probability -beginning statistics
Anatomy

Anatomy

Earning my BS in biology included four years of wide-ranging coursework, studying the appearance, internal workings, and overall performance of all manner of life forms. My studies focused on animal biology. Earning my MD involved four years of intense instruction and bedside training. There were hours of lecture, rigorous exams, extensive assessments, and demanding performance requirements. Gross Anatomy was one of my first medical school courses. Making full use of the professors, the atlas (Go, Netter!), and the cadaver lab, I was able to take away comprehensive knowledge of the bones, muscles, nerves, vessels, and organs of the human body. I would be happy to help you study this material.

For over ten years I have tutored teens and adults in general education topics, with an emphasis on math, biology, and general English skills, such as sentence structure, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. In our sessions I can remind you of educational material you have already had plus add some more to your memory banks. I am a patient tutor who will start working with you at your current knowledge level. I would like to help you do your best on the GED!

Microsoft Excel

I have been using Microsoft Excel for work and for fun, for a couple of decades. There is a wide array of things it can accomplish, from basic calculations and graphs to pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and formulae. Excel is a powerful tool but harnessing that power often isn't obvious. I can help!

Wonderful tutor!

Monica is incredible with my son. She is patient, calm, and somehow manages to never let him become frustrated. When she finishes a lesson my son is always more confident with his math skills. She has done an excellent job helping him to study for his final exam as well.

Knowledgeable & Energetic

Monica has worked with our daughter 4 times now and they've built a great rapport. What I like about Monica is that she helps my daughter with her critical thinking and process of inquiry. She's helped her with every subject and is just the right amount of serious and fun! My daughter really enjoys working with her.

Very nice and prompt but not as knowledgeable in Algebra 2 as needed for my son

Monica was a wonderful person & very prompt. She was very nice & funny & easy to reach. She helped my son with his lesson however she seemed to stumble a bit with the Algebra 2 subject.
