My love of tutoring comes from a life-long love of learning, and a desire to inspire that love in others. I know that when a student is struggling to understand the material, whether due to the teacher's teaching style or a student's lack of practice, that can really turn a student off to school and learning for a long time. I try to turn that feeling around by not only helping the student understand their current material, but helping them develop a plan for future classes, and teaching them the importance of practice and dedication.
I have been tutoring part-time since 2005, and I specialize in many levels of math and Spanish. I have taken many Math courses including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus (both single- and multi-variable), linear algebra, and differential equations. I have taken many advanced Spanish courses and have spent time studying in both Mexico and Spain. For most lessons, I do a brief chapter overview and then we work on homework problems or extra examples if need be. When I teach, I explain concepts simply and clearly, and in different ways if necessary. I provide as many examples and real-world applications as possible. I also find that reviewing past homework assignments and tests is very beneficial. But every student is different, so I'm very flexible.
My schedule is also very flexible. I do work part-time, but I have plenty of time to meet, especially afternoons, evenings, and weekends. I am open to setting up a regular weekly schedule or just as needed.
I try to be flexible with time as well. I have a 2-hour cancellation policy because I know things can come up last minute. If the lesson is cancelled more than 2 hours out, there will be no charge. Less than that, I bill at half rate, and if I'm on my way to the lesson or have gotten there, I will charge for the full lesson.
I often meet with students in their home, in a coffee shop, or in a library -- whatever is the most comfortable and convenient for the student and/or parents.
If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you reach your goals! Patricia has made a HUGE difference in my son's Calculus comprehension! Patricia is patient, and actually goes over missed problems on homework assignments. What better way to learn, than from your errors. She also goes over daily assignments given by my son's teacher. Patricia responds promptly regarding scheduling. After each session, I receive an overview of what was covered, via email. Thank you Patricia! Keep up the good work! My son and I really appreciate it.
Patricia interacts easily with my teenage son. She leads him through math (pre-calc/trig) problems by asking questions and allowing my son to answer. This shows her what he knows and helps reinforce his knowledge by explaining it. She corrects him when he is off course with a gentle prompt and discussion. He seems to respond to her in a positive manner and is receptive to continue to meet with her. Thanks Patricia.
My 3 kids are really enjoying their experience with Patricia. She comes prepared each week to focus on areas the kids need a little extra attention. Each kid gets 30 minutes with her, and they all anticipate this special time with her. Our sessions are really helping to reinforce what the kids are learning at school. We are very happy with our experience, and especially with Patricia. She is very patient, prepared, intelligent, and great with kids.
Patricia is very patient and calming and has a way of explaining things that has helped my son understand his geometry.
Patricia is very knowledgeable in 7th grade math concepts and is very patient and helpful. She is encouraging, positive, and her kind approach works well with my daughter's needs.
Patricia has done a really nice job of bonding with my daughter and helping her with math over the last year. Glad we found her through this site.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
