I’m Vanessa! I’m an English BA student at AMU who has completed 117/120 credit hours with a 3.9 GPA. I’m finishing my undergrad thesis and my conferral date of October 5, 2025. I plan to begin working on my Master’s in Creative Writing & Literature Spring 2026. I’m also a member of Sigma Tau Delta (International English Honor Society), HWA (Horror Writer Association), and IAFA (International Association for the Fantastic in Arts).

I have homeschooled for 6 years and have volunteered as a tutor for over 270 hours at UPChieve, having received my tutor certification.

I am a speculative fiction writer with a focus on dark fiction, especially fantasy. I’m also an avid reader. Alix E Harrow is one of my favorite contemporary authors. I love Poe, Tolkien, and Gertrude Stein. I also enjoy folklore, myths & rituals, and Southern Gothic.

It’s probably unsurprising that reading is my favorite hobby! Whether you need help with literature, academic writing, or creative writing, know that I’m very passionate about English as a whole.

My teaching philosophy is that student-led learning is best. When people learn from a place of curiosity, they are more likely to feel encouraged and successful. I’m an empathetic tutor, as we all start somewhere. Oftentimes, we just need a bit of encouragement to see things from a new perspective so that we might unlock our potential.
