I worked in my school district, Sumter School District, for 28 years. I had various roles in schools including teaching in the classroom and being a leader in literacy as a school reading coach for the last 5 years of my career. This was to determine growth of student achievement. As a teacher, I taught 6th grade math and science, 4th grade, 1st grade, 2nd grade, computer skills, Read 180 to 4th and 5th graders, and served as an instructional coach for one school and reading coach in 3 different schools. As a reading coach, I taught 4 different courses to teachers in my school district that were needed for the Reading Teacher endorsement.

I began preparing for my career in education through obtaining a B.A. in Early Childhood Education from the University of South Carolina at Coastal. My graduation was an honor as I earned Summa Cum Laude. I took the Praxis education tests in early childhood education as well as elementary education to give me more options in which to teach. After several years of teaching, an opportunity presented itself to the first 20 teachers in our district willing to earn a master’s degree and National Board Certification. I signed up and completed both the M.Ed in Early Childhood Education at South Carolina State University and National Board Certification as an Early Childhood Generalist. It took 2 years to complete these two accomplishments. Later in my career, I felt compelled to earn a doctorate degree. In 2005 I became Dr. Geddings. The Ed.D was in Educational Leadership. By this time I had taken on different leadership roles in my district.

Teaching children and adults has always given me great satisfaction. I am a learner and teacher at heart. My teaching style was always hands on with much learner involvement. The value of all learners’ backgrounds as well as needs led my journey with each class. Tutoring was something I did after school with students and since my retirement, I began tutoring students who missed a lot during the Covid school shutdown.
