I am certified to teach Latin and English to students in grades 6 through 12, college and adult learners. I have 30 years’ experience of teaching in the classroom and 7 years, teaching/tutoring Latin and English to students online. For many years I have enjoyed preparing Latin students to take the National Latin Exam, AP Latin Exam, National Latin Vocabulary and National Classical Etymology Exam.
I enjoy teaching students enrolled in public or private schools, homeschoolers, as well as adults in the subjects of English and Latin.
My goals as a tutor are to simplify the course's material so that students can understand it better, complete homework, and do well on quizzes and tests, in order to improve their grade average. In addition, I love to help build a student's confidence in the ability to succeed in the course.

Approved Subjects

English

English

I have taught English in the classroom for 30 years. Since retiring I have tutored students in using correct of English grammar in speaking as well as writing. I majored in English and completed my undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of South Carolina prior to my teaching career. I enjoy working with students who want to improve their use of the English language.
Grammar

Grammar

I have a BA.MA. and EdS From the University of South Carolina with a major and secondary education in the teaching subjects of both English and Latin. I am certified in both English and Latin and have taught a combination of both subjects for 30 years. I am now retired and enjoy tutoring students who are struggling to learn English grammar. I try to make learning of grammar easier by giving examples that students use use in their everyday speech to illustrate the grammar rules . For example, in teaching active and passive voice, I have them recall a football game in which a player is kicking the football and active voice and the ball is kicked by the football player in the passive voice. This example, as well as others gives students a picture they can use to remember a grammar principle that otherwise might be a challenge to understand.
Latin

Latin

After 30 years of teaching all levels of Latin in grades 6-12 in public and private classrooms, I began to tutor online. I enjoy working with students who need help as they learn Latin in the classroom or take online courses outside the classroom and need assistance to move forward in their work. The whiteboard, document upload, and screen share on Wyzant's online platform, give me all the tools necessary to explain and reinforce concepts with students. My goal is to make learning easier for students to do better on test grades and gain confidence in their knowledge in order to do well in a class.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Teaching vocabulary was always a part of my lesson plans as a certified teacher of English for 30 years in both public and private classrooms. It was part of the curriculum to teach lists from vocabulary texts and literature selections. I also taught words each day from previous PSAT and SAT exams. Teaching prefix suffix and root meanings was a part of my instruction to make learning new words easier.

Knowledgeable and Patient

My son had his 1st lesson with Elizbeth. He immediately loves it and wants to have more lessons what Elizabeth. He said Elizabeth is good at explaining things. The detailed summary of the course and evaluation makes me as a parent trust her skills. Look forward to many lessons with Elizabeth.

Wonderful Latin Tutor

My son had a last-minute session with Elizabeth for his finals last week. She was very organized and helped him review the entire finals review list within the given time. I look forward to booking more classes with Elizabeth to get my son ready for Latin 3 honors.

Extremely helpful

Another great lesson! Latin really is cumulative, as a learning experience. Without this kind of help, I imagine I would be very much lost. Thanks, JW
