Grammar,

Grammar

I have a BA.MA. and EdS From the University of South Carolina with a major and secondary education in the teaching subjects of both English and Latin. I am certified in both English and Latin and have taught a combination of both subjects for 30 years. I am now retired and enjoy tutoring students who are struggling to learn English grammar. I try to make learning of grammar easier by giving examples that students use use in their everyday speech to illustrate the grammar rules . For example, in teaching active and passive voice, I have them recall a football game in which a player is kicking the football and active voice and the ball is kicked by the football player in the passive voice. This example, as well as others gives students a picture they can use to remember a grammar principle that otherwise might be a challenge to understand.
Latin

Latin

After 30 years of teaching all levels of Latin in grades 6-12 in public and private classrooms, I began to tutor online. I enjoy working with students who need help as they learn Latin in the classroom or take online courses outside the classroom and need assistance to move forward in their work. The whiteboard, document upload, and screen share on Wyzant's online platform, give me all the tools necessary to explain and reinforce concepts with students. My goal is to make learning easier for students to do better on test grades and gain confidence in their knowledge in order to do well in a class.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Teaching vocabulary was always a part of my lesson plans as a certified teacher of English for 30 years in both public and private classrooms. It was part of the curriculum to teach lists from vocabulary texts and literature selections. I also taught words each day from previous PSAT and SAT exams. Teaching prefix suffix and root meanings was a part of my instruction to make learning new words easier.

Over and above

My daughter was getting a poor grade in Latin I, so I hired Elizabeth to help her. Elizabeth has gone above and beyond what I expected, contacting the teacher and getting information from her over and over again. She also provided extra materials to help my daughter out that she did not need to do. I highly recommend her as a conscientious teacher who really wants to help her students -- and who does just that! My daughter is now getting a healthy passing grade when she might have flunked. I can't thank her enough.

Knowledgeable and Patient Teacher

Elizabeth has been working with my son since last November. She is a great Latin teacher. Her voice and explanation are very clear. My son is interested in her lessons. His grade of exam is improved steadily. Elizabeth is also very patient. I highly recommend her to any students who needs a Latin teacher.

A blessing!

Elizabeth is giving my daughter well structured lessons in a calm and patient manner. This is especially beneficial to my daughter because she suffers from anxiety. She is finally learning Latin instead of just trying to get by. We are so happy we found her.

Wonderful with all types of students

I cannot speak highly enough about Elizabeth. She works with two of my children. I have one child who has a very short attention span and likes to rush through his work. His goal in school is simply to be finished. :-) She works extensively with him, sometimes for intervals of nearly 2 hours! She is patient, slows him down, and keeps him focused (as much as is possible for him) on the task at hand. She makes him work MUCH harder than he would do on his own (or with me). And his grade in Latin is representative of their combined hard work. He is doing very well. My other child is a diligent student and Latin comes quite easily for her. While she is not in need of tutoring, I have her work with Elizabeth simply because we homeschool and I like her to have some one on one attention apart from me. Elizabeth is able to challenge her and keep her motivated. My daughter looks forward to her time with Elizabeth. In summary, I am very thankful every school day that we found Elizabeth! She has made my life as "mom" a good deal easier!

Great Tutor gets to the root of the problem

Elizabeth is a reliable and knowledgeable tutor. My daughters latest test score went up 10 points. She tries to find the students' weaknesses and work towards catching them up.

Fantastic, knowledgeable tutor

Elizabeth was a great help in preparing my son for his first semester Latin 2 final. He was really happy with the lesson. He wishes we'd found her sooner. We will definitely be using her during the second semester.

So helpful!

Elizabeth has been incredibly helpful, easy to communicate with, and a HUGE blessing to my daughter as she tries to pass her Latin class. She is making things understandable for a 12-year-old and we are so thankful!

Excellent Tutor

She’s helped my son sooo much! He was struggling as he started Latin this year in Classical Conversations but she’s helped him so much that he actually loves Latin now!

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

Elizabeth meets with my daughter once a week for Latin. My daughter's online Latin 1 course does not have a weekly class with the instructor, and Elizabeth's tutoring fills that role wonderfully. She helps with pronunciation, grammar concepts, and translation. My daughter shares her screen with Elizabeth so that they can work through parts of her online lessons she is struggling with or wants extra help on. Elizabeth is very patient, and my daughter enjoys her sessions. Most importantly, my daughter is understanding the material and keeping up good grades with the weekly tutoring.
