Grammar,

Grammar

I have a BA.MA. and EdS From the University of South Carolina with a major and secondary education in the teaching subjects of both English and Latin. I am certified in both English and Latin and have taught a combination of both subjects for 30 years. I am now retired and enjoy tutoring students who are struggling to learn English grammar. I try to make learning of grammar easier by giving examples that students use use in their everyday speech to illustrate the grammar rules . For example, in teaching active and passive voice, I have them recall a football game in which a player is kicking the football and active voice and the ball is kicked by the football player in the passive voice. This example, as well as others gives students a picture they can use to remember a grammar principle that otherwise might be a challenge to understand.
Latin

Latin

After 30 years of teaching all levels of Latin in grades 6-12 in public and private classrooms, I began to tutor online. I enjoy working with students who need help as they learn Latin in the classroom or take online courses outside the classroom and need assistance to move forward in their work. The whiteboard, document upload, and screen share on Wyzant's online platform, give me all the tools necessary to explain and reinforce concepts with students. My goal is to make learning easier for students to do better on test grades and gain confidence in their knowledge in order to do well in a class.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Teaching vocabulary was always a part of my lesson plans as a certified teacher of English for 30 years in both public and private classrooms. It was part of the curriculum to teach lists from vocabulary texts and literature selections. I also taught words each day from previous PSAT and SAT exams. Teaching prefix suffix and root meanings was a part of my instruction to make learning new words easier.

Excellent teacher!

Ms Elizabeth started to tutor my son a couple weeks ago. She is very experienced and patient. With a couple of lessons, my son improved a lot and did much better in Latin. Highly recommend!

Expert teacher with unparalleled dedication to students!

Elizabeth's superior expertise as a Latin teacher combined with her patience and dedication to her students have been enormously helpful to my 7th grade son (and to me as mom trying to support a struggling student)! Elizabeth is able to explain Latin in ways that are clear and accessible. She is familiar with and very knowledgeable about various Latin text books and curricula. She not only helps my son to better understand his Latin class work but also directs him to additional resources (educational videos, charts, etc.) to enhance his learning. Elizabeth was tremendously helpful in communicating directly with my son's Latin teacher to help facilitate a midyear transfer into a different course level when it became apparent that he was enrolled in an inappropriate class due to a mismatch in Latin curricula between his prior school and a new school. In every way, Elizabeth is a true gem of a teacher and tutor!

Committed and caring tutor

My son has met with Elizabeth 3 times now. Each time he commented that she has been extremely helpful and that he "learned a lot." She is very committed to helping students learn, and she goes out of her way to send extra documents and video clips to help students learn. We feel lucky to have found her!

She is simply the best!

My son is new to Latin this year and the school will have quite a lot homework quiz and test from time to time. Elizabeth helped my son with his middle school Latin. She is really knowledgeable and patient. My son had been straight A since the tutoring session. She is the best!

She’s patient, has years of experience and clearly invests in her kids to see them achieve success!

Last fall my eighth grade son was in his final year of Latin. It wasn’t long before I saw a shift in his confidence and demeanor and knew he was struggling to understand the materials. My mom radar went up that I needed to get him help and fast. He was having to take the class on line with his teacher conducting it from the high school. He never met her in person. Seeing the compounding challenges he was facing, I searched the web for help. I surprisingly found Wyzant and saw they offered multiple tutors in Latin. After reading each bio., I felt Ms. Elizabeth P. would be a good match for him. I was right. My son responded very well to her teachings. He was responsible meeting with her twice a week on line and over time, his teacher saw great positive results. His teacher had been hesitant about him getting help outside of school but by the end of the first semester, she was praising both my son and Ms. Elizabeth. It was a team effort. His confidence boosted, he started to comprehend the subject and his grades sky rocketed to A’s. I would highly recommend Ms. Elizabeth. She’s patient, has years of experience and clearly invests in her kids to see them achieve success. We couldn’t have been happier. Thank you Wyzant for making the process easy to find good help! I’ll be recommending you all to our peers.

Highly knowledgeable Latin teacher

Elizabeth P clearly is an experienced teacher who knows how to break down Latin in a way that can be understood by beginner students. My son needed extra help when he was thrown into a 2nd-year Latin class as a first-year student. From the very first lesson, he remarked that Mrs. P explained the concepts to him better than his school teacher. She helped him catch up to his class in a short amount of time. He is now receiving an A in his class. His school teacher is so impressed with how he's improved from the beginning of the year and Mrs. P was instrumental in patiently helping my son work through this very difficult subject.
