I taught reading and English/Language Arts for more than 35 years. Although my areas of certification are Middle School ELA and High School English, I have my BA in English and my MEd in Elementary Education with more than 30 hours past the Master's Degree. These added hours are focused around reading. I have experience tutoring several elementary students, and have also worked with several student teachers who were practice teaching phonics in primary and elementary school.

Phonics

Teaching phonics, a cornerstone in literacy education, is a method for teaching reading and writing that begins with development of the student's phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes- the smallest units of speech. Teaching the correspondence between sounds and the graphemes, the spelling patterns, that represent them enables beginning and struggling readers to decode new words by blending the sounds together, thus unlocking the world of words. My education and experience that qualify me to teach phonics include: --BA. in English --M. Ed. Elementary Education --30 plus hours with a focus in literacy above the M.Ed. --35 plus years teaching and tutoring reading

My diverse and lengthy (38+'years) background in preparing a wide variety of students for high school and college, teaching and tutoring elementary through college students, and supervising student teachers makes me uniquely qualified to tutor fledgling teachers for the PRAXIS. I continue to have opportunities to hone my experience and expertise as I teach Developmental Studies Reading/ English and tutor students for PRAXIS at Trident Technical College. Teaching COMPASS Refresher, SAT/ACT Reading/English, and College Skill classes for the TTC Continuing Education department along with working as a student teacher supervisor for Ashland University, where I received the honor of being named an AU Professional Fellow for the AU Southern Internship program, also qualify me to become a WyzAnt PRAXIS tutor.

I have a Master's Degree in Elementary Education along with experience teaching social studies to middle schoolers. The study of social studies investigates how people live and organize themselves in society --human relationships and how society works. Social studies as a part of a school or college curriculum is concerned with the study of social relationships and the functioning of society and is usually made up of courses in history, government, economics, civics, sociology, geography, and anthropology.

As a college and middle school teacher with an M Ed. in Elementary Education and certification in middle/high school ELA and English, I have integrated study skills into all areas of my teaching and tutoring for the past 35 years. One important aspect of study skills is SQRRR (PQRST) which I have taught at all levels. It was a great honor recently to receive a request from a former middle school student of mine asking that I tutor her child--a struggling middle school student--in study skills!

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

Mrs. Sherrolyn K. tutored my son the entire school year. I was extremely impressed with my son's improvement. He went from the low 60's to 80's and 90's with his English grades. Mrs. Sherrolyn K. is absolutely amazing. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a high school English tutor.

Great Tutor!

Sherrolyn is a wonderful tutor! Mrs. K. has been working with our 5th grader for months now and we have been very pleased with her progress. Mrs. K. is patient and kind and has developed a good relationship with our daughter. So while her hour is focused on tutoring, there is some nice chatting back and forth between them as well. We hired Mrs. K. to work with our daughter on reading and have been so appreciative that she is willing to change her lesson plan when our child feels like she needs help studying for a Social Studies test or is having trouble writing an Essay for class. She is reliable and punctual and communicates quickly if there is a scheduling issue.
