I am keen to work as a tutor through the Wyzant platform. I am a Spanish speaker with 14 years of experience speaking English and can primarily tutor physics and math. I have a reasonable level of expertise in tutoring going as far back as my years in Grinnell College as an undergraduate physics major when I gave lectures on basic introductory astronomy concepts in a month-long student-led course; additionally, in my fourth year, I helped underclassmen students with physics homework every week helping each iron out the details of their assignments. This lecturing and tutoring was all English-based.
In more recent times, however, I have 1-on-1 tutored Spanish-speaking students who only partially understand English or speak both languages. I have done this part-time at the middle school and high school level for all main subjects. The focus I have for my students is to help them understand the substance of each task, and what it's asking for, as well as make connections to the already covered topics clear to make their overall knowledge, and what they are presently learning a coherent whole. Henceforth, my approach puts the students first, giving them the context of the task at hand, the plan for tackling the task, and providing suggestions and explanations along the way. I make sure to explain in Spanish and/or English as needed for their best understanding. In general, my teaching approach is kinesthetic and visually driven; I make analogies of the physics students can see firsthand as well as diagrams to illustrate the paradigms needed to solve each problem. I also explain these techniques in similar examples to help students along. For non-STEM courses, my tutoring is similar but fitted for each subject. In general, it always involves: covering the context, the plan for carrying out the work, (exercise, write-up, entry, etc.), and providing the student with suggestions and explanations along the way.
