I'm Ricky and I've been an educator and coach for 33 years. I have a BA and MA in History with collaterals in Geography and Political Science. My MA specialization was in US political history. I've taught every grade 6 thru college survey classes and have taught all of the major sub-disciplines of social studies. I've received National Board Certification twice and am have certification in AP American Government and AP US History. Furthermore, I've been a reviewer and writer for national testing companies having reviewed, or collaborated in designing, dozens of standardized tests. This experience allows me to help students understand how to break down test questions so as to better understand and successfully answer what is being asked. I've also served as a curriculum designer on both the local and state levels and understand the connection between learning objectives, activities, and assessments that students often have difficulty understanding. In addition to traditional classroom (and virtual) instruction, I've also worked individually with students in homebound situations for over 5 years.
One of the best ways to understand my teaching strategy is to know that I've also been a coach for over 3 decades. In the same way that coaches design drills to develop skills and attributes that translate into success within the sport, I design learning activities to translate in the development of skills and knowledge in social studies. Rote memorization does not translate into long-term learning. I work with students to develop learning skills, methods, and knowledge that will transfer into divergent areas and into the future. I firmly believe that all people can learn the methods and processes in becoming more effective thinkers!
