About Les

Bio

I am a computer scientist and cryptographer. I have more than 40 years of experience working as an innovator and disruptive technologist in advanced technology research and development. I spent most of my career working at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC, the US Navy’s corporate research facility, founded by Thomas Edison. I worked in the Center for High Assurance Systems. That’s a nice way of saying I have been hacking computers for more than 40 years.

Computer science, networking and the engineering associated with them are what I do. I understand the internal core of how computers and networks operate. Whether you're trying to figure out the algorithm design for a numerical analysis problem or can't figure out why your router isn't configured correctly, I've been taking those problems apart and solving them in time and mission critical environments my whole career.

I'm looking for students that are committed and interested in learning. I'm not looking for students that are hoping I'll be able to do their homework for them.

Computer Science

I have a BS degree in Computer Science from WVU. I worked at the Naval Research Laboratory for more than 30 years. Most of the systems I designed for military use will never be discussed in public literature (I hope). One notable exception is the Naval Key Distribution System (NKDS), the US Navy’s conversion from paper key material in cryptographic devices to electronic key material.
Networking (Computer)

Networking (Computer)

I have a BS degree in Computer Science from WVU. I worked at the Naval Research Laboratory for more than 30 years. I have designed networks for systems from the Strategic Defense Initiate (SD() to the KG-30 cryptographic communications network on USAF AWACS radar aircraft. Most of the systems I designed for military use will never be discussed in public literature (I hope). One notable exception is the Naval Key Distribution System (NKDS), the US Navy’s conversion from paper key material in cryptographic devices to electronic key material. NSA still uses my design in the core of their electronic key management system.

Extremely knowledgeable and approachable

Les helped me work through an assignment I was struggling with by giving me clear and detailed explanations of the processes involved. I would thoroughly recommend him if you need help with cryptography and I'm sure he's just as capable across computer science fields. Thanks again!

Extremely knowledgable and helpful

Great session, filled with expert information that would have taken me hours to get a grasp on and set me in the right direction for personal growth in Blockchain.

Highly knowledgeable and excellent teacher.

Les was phenomenal! He was able to break down material in way I could understand it. His knowledge of ciphers and crypto is in-depth and he really communicates it in a way that is comprehendible even if your knowledge is not that great. Prior to my lesson with Les, I was really struggling computing ciphers but I now feel much more confident in my abilities. Will definitely be utilizing his knowledge again.
