I grew up in the upstate of South Carolina always wanting to be a teacher and loving to learn new and exciting things. I started teaching at Boy Scout camp as a Civil Development instructor (and then the director of the department). I worked as an AVID tutor for middle school and high school students, and absolutely enjoyed helping them make connections between what they learned in class and what they were working on in other classes. I gained my teaching credential from Lander University and the found a job teaching high school students at a Montessori charter school, which provided me an opportunity to begin practicing really innovative and student-centered methods of teaching and learning.
I try to connect social studies content to what is going on in my students' lives and the world that they are living in. I try to use pop culture and humor to get the content of my classes across to my students and help them to understand what they are learning in a deeper way.
