I'm an extroverted college admissions writing coach and public school teacher. I've taught various middle and high school literature courses along with US History. I'm a lifelong learner with degrees from BYU (BA), Concordia (MAT), Johns Hopkins (MA), and the University of South Carolina (MEd and EdD).

While completing my undergraduate degree, I worked as a research assistant focused on gathering primary source documents to support the department chair's writing of textbooks on American history. I extensively edited manuscripts for publication, focusing on content clarity and grammatical accuracy. I learned not only the depth of content for US History but also the power that comes through the personal narrative; I love emphasizing with students the storytelling element in our nation's history.

My passion for writing and literature inspires my students to take on even the most difficult of assignments. By teaching students to consider the metacognitive elements of writing, they are able to "think like the teacher" to analyze writing prompts and effectively use rubrics.

I also tutor students for AP tests in US History and Language and Composition. I always make learning personalized as I work with each of my students to develop individual educational plans with them so that we could work collaboratively in a coaching relationship.

Through my work and education as a teacher since 2009, I have come to see teaching and learning as truly a great work of coaching and mentoring. I focus on working side-by-side with my students to guide them through the learning process. From helping my local community, I have also spent copious amounts of time coaching students through college admissions essay writing. I know how to help students leverage their own unique life experiences to showcase leadership qualities to universities through the admissions process.

Approved Subjects

American History

American History

I earned my bachelors degree in Political Science with an emphasis in American Politics and US History. I also taught middle school US History for three years and have tutored students for the AP US History exam. I have received several grants from the US government for teachers to be able to participate in experiential learning and have traveled the East Coast studying history.
Bible Studies

Bible Studies

As a requirement for university graduation, I completed 21 hours in college coursework in religion classes. I have taken classes in both the first and second halves of the Old Testament, the writings of Isaiah, The New Testament, the Acts of the Apostles, comparative religion, and more! As a senior project, I translated several chapters of Genesis from the German Luther Bible into English and wrote about the affect word choice has on translated meaning. I have regularly studied the Bible since and taught for three years in a religious institution for primary aged children.
English

English

For more than a decade I have taught middle school and high school English. From my experience in middle school and high school settings, I have constructed a variety of English syllabi. For three years I served as the grade level chair at the district level writing curriculum for implementation with over eight thousand students. I am well versed in a variety of literary works, writing techniques, and forms of literary analysis.
Grammar

Grammar

I have taken significant college coursework in writing and am currently finishing my dissertation, which has been an extensive, exhaustive, writing process. I taught English for 4.5 years, with one-third of my student's coursework focusing on grammar instruction. Additionally, my first job out of high school was working for the government, editing reports and presentations for the industrial health and safety department at NASA Ames.
Literature

Literature

I taught a 9th grade English literature course that focused on classic works from around the globe, 10th grade contemporary world literature, and 12th grade British literature. Shakespearean analysis is my favorite to coach students on, whether it be plays or poetry. I also enjoy teaching American literary classics (To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby) and works out of the Harlem Renaissance.
Phonics

Phonics

I researched and wrote my doctoral dissertation on culturally relevant reading strategies, during which time I read extensively about and instructed students in phonological awareness including: phonemic awareness, rhyme, blending, isolation, and segmenting. I am well versed in the two main methods of reading instruction (phonics and whole language) and the dichotomy that they represent. I use a balanced literacies approach to teach reading.
Political Science

Political Science

I was a research assistant for a professor of Political Science for three years in addition to earning my bachelors degree from Brigham Young University in Political Science. My area of concentration was in American Politics but I also had significant coursework in Middle Eastern Studies. I have taken courses and completed research in European politics and security, comparative politics, and political philosophy.
Proofreading

Proofreading

During my undergraduate program, I worked for a professor of political science editing his book manuscripts for publication. I also spent extensive amounts of time peer-editing dissertations during my doctoral programs and worked for the Federal Government for two years, during which time my primary responsibility was to edit reports by civil servants before their publication. I now work as a writing coach editing student work.

I attended a religious institution during my undergraduate degree which required me to complete a minor in religion. I took classes in: The New Testament Gospels, The New Testament Acts of the Apostles through Revelations, The Old Testament Genesis through 2 Samuel, The Old Testament 1 Kings through Malachi, and The Book of Isaiah. I typically tutor out of the King James Bible but also have supported students with religion coursework through the Catholic Youth Bible.

Knowledgeable and fun

Jacqueline made Shakespeare easy to understand for my daughter. She went over the play line by line, pointing out the literary devices. She also gave a little background about Shakespeare. She is fun and very encouraging. My daughter enjoyed her lesson and is motivated to continue reading.

Highly efficient, knowledgable and patient tutor.

My son was having a hard time with Humanities reading material, taking notes and converting it into a writing assignment. Jacqueline was very well prepared for the class and helped with notes taking strategy, which is the first step in helping him organizing the material that he reads. My son loved the class. I would highly recommend Jacqueline.
