I am an experienced elementary educator with a B.S. in Elementary Education, an M.A.Ed. in Reading, and a K–12 Reading Certificate. I spent 20 years as a classroom teacher working primarily with students in kindergarten through third grade and also served for two years as a Reading Specialist. Throughout my career, I have provided one-on-one and small-group tutoring, and I have continued tutoring students since retiring from the classroom. I currently work as an Educational Diagnostician for an educational evaluations company and am working toward certification in the Barton Reading & Spelling System. My areas of expertise include reading, phonics, spelling, writing, handwriting, and elementary academic support.
My approach to tutoring is individualized, encouraging, and focused on helping students become more confident and independent learners. I believe effective instruction begins with identifying exactly where a student is having difficulty and then breaking skills into manageable steps that allow the student to experience success. In reading and spelling, I use explicit, systematic instruction and incorporate structured literacy and multi-sensory techniques when appropriate. I also support students with reading comprehension, writing, and handwriting, always focusing on meaningful progress rather than perfection. Most importantly, I strive to build a positive relationship with each student and create lessons that are engaging, supportive, and responsive to the way that individual child learns best.
